Argus Skeel's Notebook
On Day 19 of the campaign (1 Mirtul), Collateral Damage killed Argus Skeel outside Phandalin and found a notebook in his cloak pocket.
The notebook was bound with red leather. The front cover featured black text at the bottom that read "Argus Skeel." Several shreds of paper were connected to the spine; it appeared that the first dozen or so pages of the notebook were torn out.
The first page that was visible featured a heading at the top that read "Phandalin Notes." That heading had an eerie glow to it; it seemed to change colors slightly when looking at it from different angles, alternating from dark crimson to a lighter, fainter red. Based on that glowing effect, the notebook seemed to be a magical communication device, allowing someone to write words on a page and have them be visible to someone in a different location.
The next several pages included the following notes, listed by date:
22 Tarsakh - Learned today that the Lords' Alliance has a human named Sildar and a half-orc named Thek who are active in town. Rumors are that the townmaster Toblen Stonehill may be giving the town to the alliance. Toblen's wife Trilena runs the tavern at the inn. She told me to go to the miner's exchange for work.
23 Tarsakh - Adventurers came to town - a human, elf, gnome and blue dragonborn. They met with the Lords' Alliance, and Toblen was there. Waiting for sentries to arrive before I try to take them out, I may be overmatched by myself.
24 Tarsakh - The Lionshield Coster hired an assistant manager, and she has kobolds working for her. Curious. The half-orc Thek has been spending a lot of time at the ruined manor on the east end of town. The Lords' Alliance seems to be planning something there.
25 Tarsakh - I learned more about the Lionshield Coster assistant manager. Her name is Velleen, and she might be a Talassan cultist? She wears the Talos symbol on a necklace. I saw her at the Stonehill Inn tavern talking to an assistant from a shop called Barthen's Provisions.
26 Tarsakh - Toblen Stonehill has been moving boxes from the Townmaster's Hall to the inn. I also saw him go to the miner's exchange, but I think the guildmaster saw me watching him. Need to avoid that part of town for now. Trilena has also been moving boxes to an abandoned tavern called the Sleeping Giant.
27 Tarsakh - A large traveling party arrived. Someone named Frederich Wulfrun is in charge, and they all moved into Stonehill Inn. Hamun then delivered the new sentries. His goblin creation is especially impressive. The big sentries are now digging tunnels to Stonehill Inn and the manor on the edge of town. No sign of the adventurers in recent days.
28 Tarsakh - Frederich Wulfrun is calling himself the Lord of Phandalin. Looks like Toblen agreed to turn the town over to the alliance. Guards are now on patrol throughout the town. Need to be more careful.
29 Tarsakh - Rumors about a female blue dragonborn walking around town. I didn't see her but heard multiple others mention her.
30 Tarsakh - The adventurers are back. They helped the town guards kill manticores to the south, but some of the guards died. Found the guard bodies and raised them to add to my group of sentries. After returning, I found weapons and armor piled up on the ground above the cellar. Inside the cellar, four of my weaker sentries were destroyed by some kind of explosion, but the others are fine. The adventurers are staying in town overnight. Paying close attention, will bring the sentries and attack when the time is right. Maybe tomorrow while everyone is distracted by the festival.
Greengrass - A white dragon chased orcs into town at the end of the festival. The dragon flew away with a halfling in its mouth and the town defended itself against the orcs. Still waiting for the right time to kill the adventurers. I'll at least distract them so Taris can find the dragon.
