Dragonkin

There are many creatures of Draconic ancestry, commonly called Dragonkin, that are descended from True Dragons. Dragonkin usually lack the high intelligence and innate magic of true dragons.

Amphipteres:

Sometimes called Couatls, Amphipteres are feathered serpents with brilliant feathered wings, making them resemble giant flying snakes. Because of their appearance Amphipteres are believed to be descended from Coatl Dragons, but while they resemble dragons they are of Celestial origin, wielding divine magic and serving as guardians and caretakers for the gods.

Drakes:

Drakes are small quadrupedal dragonkin that lack wings and the ability to fly. They range in size from a large dog to that of a draft horse. Drakes are believed to be descended from mutated dragon eggs, but unlike true dragons Drakes lack a breath weapon and have an animalistic intelligence, more comparable to dogs. Some people will breed Drakes to serve as guardians, like larger, more dangerous guard dogs.

Faerie Dragons:

Faerie Dragons are tiny quadrupedal dragonkin with butterfly-like wings. While they share many qualities with Fey Dragons they are more closely related to Pseudodragons. Faerie Dragons may resemble dragons but they are of fey origin, wielding fey magic and having an affinity for humour and playing tricks and pranks. They are common in the Feywild, often kept as pets.

Fungal Dragons:

Sometimes known as Deep Dragons or Slate Dragons, Fungal Dragons are quadrupedal dragons that are commonly grey in colour, with large white eyes and covered in large colonies of symbiotic fungus. While they share many traits with True Dragons they have lost much of their majesty and intelligence. Fungal Dragons commonly reside in the Underdark.

Hydras:

Hydras are multi headed dragonkin, they are quadrupedal with exceptionally long necks and lack wings. Hydras are famed for their regenerative abilities, allowing them to quickly regrow body parts, particularly their heads. Hydra’s behind their lives with five heads, often accumulating more by the end of their lives. Fire is notable for being the only thing capable of stopping the regeneration. Due to their long necks, acidic blood and affinity to live in swamps, Hydras are believed to be descended from Acid Dragons.

Kirin:

Sometimes called Ki-rin or Qilin, Kirin are scaled equine dragonkin, commonly with antlers, flowing mains and cloven hooves, resembling a mix between a dragon and a goat. Their scales are usually a brilliant shining gold colour. Kirin are Celestial in origin, wielding divine magic, and only share a few similarities with Dragons.

Pseudodragons:

Pseudodragons are small, cat-like dragons. They are quadrupedal and winged dragonkin but lack the intelligence and innate magic of true dragons. It is believed that Pseudodragons were created magically through preventing a dragon hatchling from maturing, resulting in a common pet and familiar among mages.

Salamanders:

Sometimes called Behirs, Salamanders are serpentine dragonkin with twelve legs and resemble a combination of centipede and crocodile. They have smooth deep blue scales and possess a lighting breath, signalling that Salamanders are probably descended from Storm Dragons, either naturally or magically. Salamanders are adept climbers, commonly living in deep pits, high caves in cliff walls, caverns and narrow, twisting tunnels.

Sea Serpents:

Sea serpents are long, legless and wingless dragonkin. They are feared predators of the sea, with shiny, fish-like scales and powerful fins to propel them through the water at great speed. They share many qualities with Sea Dragons, yet lack the high intelligence and innate magic of their ancestors.

Wyrms:

Sometimes called Sand Wyrms, Wyrms are legless and wingless dragonkin that almost resemble giant snakes. They are predators that commonly reside in deserts, propelling themselves over the sand at high speeds.

Wyverns:

Wyverns are bipedal winged dragonkin with venomous tail mounted stingers. They lack the intelligence and innate magic of true dragons and are often bred and trained for use as aerial mounts. Wyvern venom is also a commonly sought after poison.
