Dragons

Dragons, sometimes called True Dragons, are one of the oldest species of people in the universe, followed by Elves, whom they have a long and complicated history with. Dragons are descended from the Draconic gods Bahamut and Tiamat, with all other Draconic creatures descended from dragons.   While there are many creatures of Draconic ancestry, commonly called Dragonkin, True Dragons are identified by their high, elf-like intelligence, innate magic and their ability to continuously grow stronger as they grow in age.   Dragons are usually reptilian, scaled and quadrupedal, and equipped with two large wings and a long tail. Dragons are also famed for their deadly breath weapon that ranges from a cone of fire to a barrage of psionic energy. Ancient Dragons are also known to be able to shapeshift into a humanoid form.   While this is the most common appearance, some subspecies of Dragon are feathered, some are more snake-like in appearance, wingless, yet can still fly, and some even lack legs and the ability to walk.   Dragons are usually solitary creatures, they are rarely found interacting with other dragons or people outside of mating or territory disputes. Dragons are also known to be collectors, almost all dragon species are recorded to collect hordes of treasure, ranging from gold and artwork to knowledge.   Dragons are an extremely diverse species found in almost every environment on Exorsia and across the Planes, this combined with their ancient origins have resulted in many Draconic subspecies all with their own distinct appearances and traits. These subspecies are often categorised into five groups, Arcane Dragons, Astral Dragons, Elemental Dragons, Planar Dragons and Psionic Dragons.

Maturity:

Dragons have an exceptionally long lifespan, living on average between 1,200 and 1,500 years. As they age Dragons go through four distinct stages of growth, with those that exceed their natural lifespan entering the rare fifth stage.   Unlike other species around the universe dragons do not deteriorate as they age and instead a Dragons age causes it to grow in power and strength. The older the dragon, the more formidable it becomes. Only when a Dragon enters its final years of life, its twilight years, does it eventually weaken and become frail with age.   Greatwyrms, or Archdragons, are an exception to this, being the fifth and final stage in a dragon’s life span. When an ancient Dragon comes to the end of its life, instead of passing away there is a small chance that the dragon continues to grow in power, becoming immensely powerful instead of dying, transcending their former selves to become immortal Quasi-Deities.
Age (Years)Category
0 - 10 Wyrmling
10 - 100 Young Dragon
100 - 800 Adult Dragon
800 - 1,500 Ancient Dragon
1,500 + Greatwyrm

Biology:

Despite their size, Dragons do not require a large amount of food to survive, only Wyrmlings require constant feeding. As a Dragon ages they can go longer and longer periods without food, going weeks and months without eating. This is supplemented by the fact that Dragons spend a lot of time sleeping, in a hibernation-like state, allowing them to efficiently conserve energy. Ancient and Greatwyrm dragons spend the most time in this state and can go many years without eating.   While in this hibernation-like state a Dragon can quickly awake without much lethargy and despite seeming unconscious a Dragon's senses are fully active, making them difficult to sneak up on.

Reproduction:

Dragons hatch from eggs. A Female Dragon can produce a clutch of approximately 1 - 2 eggs. This egg must be kept warm for around 18 months before it hatches. If the egg is not kept in the appropriate climate it will hibernate indefinitely until the right conditions are met.   Some Dragons have the ability to shapeshift into a humanoid form, allowing them to cross-breed with humanoid creatures. This is speculated to be the origin of the Dragonborn species. This is an incredibly uncommon occurrence with a low chance of producing fertile offspring.
