The Feywild

The Feywild, also known as the Plane of Faerie or simply Faerie, is part of the Spirit World, along with the Shadowfell its opposite counterpart.   The Feywild is a vibrant and colourful realm, a natural landscape stretching out in all directions, suffused with wild magic. The Feywild embodies unrestrained emotions, bountiful energy, and the very changing nature of life and death, growth and decay. This is in contrast to the Shadowfell that embodies the absence of emotion and energy, a land motionless and unchanging.   Visitors to the Feywild will find that all their sensations, both sensory and emotional, are heightened. Smells are stronger, colours are more vivid, sounds are clearer, but at the same time shadows are darker and impulses are harder to control. Strong emotions, not kept in check, suffuse the landscape of the Feywild itself, altering it. Flowers will wilt in the presence of sandness, plants will become aggressive in the proximity of the angry, while nature blooms in the company of the joyful.   The entire realm is suffused with magic, from the tiniest blade of grass to the tallest of mountains, many of the Feywild’s inhabitants are also innately infused with magic. Because of this magic tends to act differently within the Feywild, than it does on the Material Plane, spells can become more potent or powerful and can even manifest in entirely unexpected ways.   Time also does not work the same way in the Feywild as it does on the Material Plane. Here the flow of time has no hold, while within the Feywild you would not notice anything out of the ordinary, but upon your return you may find that mere minutes have passed or even entire months.

Geography:

The landscape of the Feywild is defined by vibrant colours and unrestrained, awe-inspiring natural beauty. Vast forests of thriving trees stretch out in every direction, dotted with sharp mountains, twisting rivers, deep lakes, crashing waterfalls, flagrant fields of flowers and dark swamps. The sky is an unnatural mix of vibrant prismatic colours, from pinks, purples, blues and greens. While there is no sun in the sky of the Feywild yet the land is still bathed in soft light. In the sky too lie the moons of Exorsia, Theira, Cyrene and Eesos, motionless upon the horizon.   Deep beneath the earth lies the Feydark, an echo of the Material Plane’s Underdark. Vast subterranean caverns below the surface, filled with strange, supernatural formations of giant bioluminescent plants and fungi, deep crystal lakes with waterfalls that flow gently down from the surface and twisted caverns that radiate otherworldly magic.

Seasons:

The Feywild is also a land of unchanging seasons. At the very heart of Faerie lies the House of Horace, a towering palace and home to the Lord of the Feywild, the God of Seasons. From around the House of Horace emanates each of the four seasons, splitting the Feywild into quadrants of perpetual Spring, Summer, Autumn and Winter. Each of the seasons has its own environment, conditions and weather, each slowly transitioning to the other as you travel between them.   Spring is cloaked in a perpetual dawn, the plants and trees are a verdant green, and flowers bloom in every direction. The land is warm and there is a rare shower of light rain and the soft gust of the wind.   Summer is cloaked in perpetual day, the plants are wild and vibrant, while the waters are warm and inviting. The land is hot and bathed in light, it is rare for the weather to be anything but clear skies.   Autumn is cloaked in perpetual dusk, the trees are the colours of orange and red, and the ground is covered in a layer of decaying leaves. Mushrooms thrive here. The land is cool and chilly, it is also prone to strong winds and heavy rain, turning the land damp and muddy.   Winter is cloaked in perpetual night, yet the sky is filled with the light of the moons and stars. Many of the trees are bare of leaves and very little plants flourish here. The land is cold and prone to storms of snow or hail, covering almost every surface in a layer of snow and frozen with ice.

Courts & People:

Each of the seasons is ruled and controlled by one of the two courts of the Feywild, the Seelie and the Unseelie. The Seelie Court, under the rulership of the God-Queen Titania, is associated with life and growth and presides over the seasons of Spring and Summer. The Unseelie Court, under the rulership of the God-Queen Mab, is associated with death and decay and presides over the seasons of Autumn and Winter. Both courts have an intense rivalry, believing the other to be frivolous or dull. Many of the Feywilds inhabitants are subjects of one of these courts, with those outside of them known as the Wildfey.   The Feywild is home to many hundreds of creatures, from simple beasts to unique mortal species, but the majority of its population are the mischievous Fey, multitudes of chaotic beings suffused with the magic of the Feywild and bound to its ever changing nature. The Feywild is also believed to be where the first mortal life sprung into existence, where the first Elves evolved before they ever arrived in Exorsia.
