Trolls

Trolls are a species of diverse Giants with horrific appetites, eating anything they can catch and devour. They have a powerful sense of smell, making them effective hunters.

Trolls are best known for their regenerative properties, they regenerate at such a rate that if they lose an arm, a leg, or even its head, those dismembered parts can sometimes act with a life of their own. A Troll can even reattach severed body parts, untroubled by its momentary disability. Only acid and fire can arrest the regenerative properties of a Troll’s flesh.

This constant regeneration makes Trolls especially susceptible to mutation. This has resulted in countless variants of trolls with strange and unique features. Such transformations can result from what the troll has done or what has been done to it. A decapitated Troll might grow two heads from the stump of its neck, while a Troll that eats a poisonous animal creature might become poisonous themselves.

Trolls tend to be solitary creatures, preferring to live alone in swamplands or forest caves as not to share food. But rarely Trolls will group in small families of three, usually led by a matriarch. Despite being a risky investment, these trolls have been known to serve as mercenaries in exchange for food and treasure.

Subspecies:

Despite there being many variants of Trolls, most scholars don’t recognise them as different species. Green Trolls are the most common type of Troll, found all across Exorsia and the Feywild. Another prominent group are Ice Trolls, found in Atlan and Northern Elderan, these trolls have adapted to the colder climates and can be found in conflict with Frost Giants over territory.

The only other prominent type of Troll are the Cave Trolls, sometimes called Stone Trolls, who live in communities in deep networks of underground Caves, only coming out at night as they turn to stone in daylight. Unlike other Trolls, Cave Trolls are Omnivores, surviving off and cultivating roots and mushrooms deep underground.

Appearance:

While Trolls come in a variety of appearances they are usually thin, bipedal green-skinned giants with long and lanky arms and legs. They have large, bulbous noses, three-toed feet and clawed fingers. Their hide is rubbery, and their hair is thick and ropy.

Trolls are on the shorter spectrum of Giants, standing around 10 - 15 feet tall.

Maturity:

It is unknown what the true life expectancy of a Troll is, with many of them mutating so much that they lose all semblance of being. While many Trolls are killed before they reach old age, there have been records of a few Trolls living into their first century .

Trolls mature much faster than humans do, reaching adulthood by the age of 10.
