The Shadowfell
The Shadowfell, also known as the Shadowlands, is part of the Spirit World, along with the Feywild its opposite counterpart.
The Shadowfell is a land of stagnation, a bleak and desolate place filled with undeath. While the Feywild embodies unrestrained emotions, bountiful energy, life and death, the Shadowfell embodies the absence of it, an emotionless and energyless place where everything exists between life and death, motionless and unchanging.
As an inverse to the Feywild, visitors to the Shadowfell will find that all sensations, both sensory and emotional, are lessened. Smells are weaker, sounds are warped and strange, any feelings you had are now but passing memories, even fear is but a fleeting feeling.
The whole realm lacks colour, everything in the Shadowfell looks as if the colour has been leached out of it, leaving everything in tones of monochromatic black and white.
The landscape of the Shadowfell is defined by a constant gloom, dotted with craggy landscapes, ancient ruins and forests of dead trees. There is no sun, no moon or stars, just inky black sky and rolling clouds of grey. The land is cloaked in perpetual near twilight, a grey glow acting as the only natural light source. Any lights lit within the Shadowfell are weakened and fires produced less heat, whereas shadows only seemed to grow larger and darker.
The Shadowfell is home to many undead creatures and malevolent spirits. While there are a few living creatures that make their home in the Shadowfell, their life is hard and miserable.
