Xaltri Ethnicity in Ardre | World Anvil

Xaltri

An ethnic minority found Vaina, especially the southern third. The Xaltri people are thought to have come to the Brevessarian Riverlands sometime after the Great Collapse. Their likely association with the Mornals is believed to be what initiated generations of oppression, relocations, and systemic isolation. Despite these setbacks, several principal dynasties of the latter Royal Age have had Xaltri heritage, and some of those dynasties have had a significant presence in Monos as well.   Centuries of intermarriage have eliminated any serious differences in appearance, but Xalts are generally perceived to be shorter and broader than Brevessarians, brown haired rather than black, and are often assumed to have slightly more pallid complexions (though this latter point has no support either now or in history).   The Xaltri people are strongly defined by their faith, called Xaltriism or Fatalism, which is considered largely incompatible with Azarad, the prevalent Brevessarian faith. This too has led to frequent conflict between these two groups.   Throughout Vaina's history, various faiths and sects have been promoted and banned, and in fact the Xaltri faith has spent more of its history as illegal than accepted. Because of the strong connection between this group and this faith, this has essentially led to the Xaltri people themselves being outlawed in Vaina for much of their history, forced to frequently relocate, disguise their identities, or flee to less hospitable but less structured nations like Monos and especially Far East Orckid. Today, the Xaltri people are protected under Principal law like all peoples and faiths, but unsurprisingly, many individuals suffer abuse with no reliable means of redress. Many have immigrated to the fairly recently acquired Nuvusma Purchase, a colony of Eysland, in the hopes of escaping this mistreatment. Of course, associating with the Eysch people and their Dead God has only worsened how the Xaltri are perceived.
