Crafting

Crafting magics, obviously, have to do with making things - of thread and cloth, of wood, of metal, jewellery, a wide range of tools and materials can be used. They're also part of creating specifically magical objects like talismans, protective magical clothing, or magically-focused telescopes.

Education

The most cutting-edge research on the theories related to crafting magics usually come from those who attended Schola. However, Alethorpe is queen of the Five Schools when it comes to teaching the various crafting schools.

Applications

  • Clothing design - enchantments for fit, but also for decoration
  • Papermaking and bookbinding (such as go into the magical journals, more in Bound For Perdition.
  • Wood carving, often with embedded enchantments for useful things (healing, restful sleep, calm, etc.)
  • Metalwork, including both jewellery and talisman making, as well as more practical smithcraft.
  • Making inks and paints, which may have additional magical properties in them.

Examples

On The Bias features Cassie Jones, a dressmaker who uses both practical crafting magics and designs clothing with magical design elements.   Following Outcrossing, Ferry Wright begins focusing on tapestry work, especially restoration.   Seth Wain in Casting Nasturtiums and later appearances is a talented woodworker.   Bound For Perdition features a bookbinder, Lynet Alder, working on the early forms of the magical journals.
