Faded Girl.

by August

That book. That one book that I was enchanted with as a kid. The stories it used to have inside of the world beyond.

The story of the mantis and her knight; the wild preacher howling to the moon. The story of the cookies that would come alive.

The story of the faded girl of gray. Emotionless, and ergo colourless. The lake in the story serves as a reflection for the reader; to look back at one full of life and anger and sadness and joy, in comparison to the little girl of gray who felt nothing.

That particular story went on to talk about a small village at the edge of a lake. The girl would walk into the lake when she went away, and come out the next day always the same emotionless child. I’m sure that as a kid it was much easier to hear the story of the colour finding colour through her experiences in the town, as I look back at that story and wonder how one would willingly subject themselves to sadness or anger or the like. Though I suppose if you knew nothing of any emotion it would be better to just know what it is to feel.

In any event, hearing father read that story to me as a child, about the place where it all began and this little colourless gray girl - that was a magical moment. That was definitely my favourite in his book. The mystery of it; an enchanting story at the time of a girl who found colour and brought the world a treasure hitherto unseen.

Wouldn’t you love to stay in that mindset forever? Enchanted by a story, hopeful when looking at the vibrant colours of the world, no thoughts to the reality you’ll see as you grow old?
