Fall Off.

by August

A dash across the street, two turns to the right and then left; I did everything right and still that old man followed me. How was I to know that the cloak was covering someone? Few other people sleep out here at night, given the sheer number of derelict houses around the area. Why would he have been sleeping outside? The night’s clear sky and splashes of colour from the house-lit windows were deaf to those questions as I found myself approaching the small board-dock away from the main port.

The old bastard was quick. He was catching up to a kid with the first hints of fuzz on his chin, waving that knife in the air. I definitely wasn’t going to let my final audience be those fetid tight-knit alleyways. I knew that I had to do something…

Maybe I could give it another try? It’s supposed to work for everyone, and right now I could use some rope or something to try and get out of here with casualties. There’s colours all around us, ample material for what needs doing. It should just… Work, right?

I gave it a try, looking for that feeling they describe and…

Nothing. No rope in my hands, that weirdly fast old man is still chasing me, and the end of the dock is only feet away before the plunge.

Fuck that.

I believe I turned at that point and sent a spray of colour his way using those familiar bardic magics. I remember the man trying to stop himself but I assume it was his now blind eyes that led to him bouncing off the walls and ground, slipping and stumbling to the wooden dock with his torso falling off the edge first. The underside of the wooden dock had little support for his grip; he was just there panicking. Scrambling. Begging for help now that the tables have turned, just like they all do.

The night was still young and I had places to be. His old grip lasted about 20 seconds before he finally lost his strength.

Turned out to be a nice cloak, though. Deep purple, angled cut.
