The Sapient Crown
Sweat streams down the side of Ulron's head as he focuses on gestures and incantations unfamiliar to him. Fire streaks from his hand towards the giant insects blocking his passage to the surface, their clicking screeches masking the sound of his stance shifting. His spear - a weapon not held before today - pierces their carapace and he takes off running. Thoughts of home and family drift through his mind, but he can no longer conjure the image of his wife's face.
The Sapient Crown is an artifact that shows itself throughout history. It is an obsidian band that appears to be flecked with gold. When the light catches its surface, it appears to reflect a deep red hue. In its resting state, the crown would comfortably fit most human heads but when held by a creature with sentience, it changes size to fit their head.
The crown has become more powerful with time. It is now an intelligent item, conscious of its own abilities and able to travel the world to turn up where those who need its power (and are willing to pay the price). In doing so, the crown gains new knowledge and abilities for its repertoire.
Intelligence (History) to know myths and stories about the artifact.
Wisdom (Insight) to recognise its sentience and hunger.
