Mechanical Grafts

In the Riven Lands, several technologies have been recently developed that replace lost body parts and their functionality. These vary widely in complexity, functionality, size and elegance. There is a wide range in value as well - a barely animated wooden leg is worth far less than a eye made from precious stones and metal.

Access/Availability

Most basic mechanical grafts are relatively simple to create and form a basic part of an artificer's repertoire. They can be made from basic materials influenced by force, life or mind depending on the body part being replaced, but are often made more ornate and fancy for wealthy clients. Experienced artificers and tinkerers are unlikely to want to waste their time producing basic mechanical grafts, instead leaving the mundane task to their apprentices.

Utility

At a base level, mechanical grafts replace the functionality of the body part they imitate with average ability. Their use isn't hugely common, however, because of the existence of magical regeneration. A person with more than one graft is likely to be making a statement, rather than simply using them out of necessity.

Example Items

  • Erstatz Eye - a replacement eye with normal functionality. Other versions may exist with more impressive traits.
  • Prosthetic Limb - replaces an arm or leg. By default, does not give any improved abilities.
  • Ventilating Lungs - replaces the users lungs, allowing them to breathe even when magic would normally hinder this.
  • Perpetual Heart - a replacement for the heart that improves the users ability to resist overexertion and increases natural lifespan. This is an exceptionally rare item that won Gimmick's Grand Prize for Extraordinary Artifice when it was first created.
