Liberty
A cosmopolitan trading hub, founded by escaped slaves.
Found on the northeastern coast of Geganna, Liberty is distant from most other civilisation. A port town, Liberty is a trading hub for goods and products native to the surround area. It is well known for its cosmopolitan mix of cultures, architecture and entertainment.
Government
Liberty is governed by a consortium of trade guilds. Their financial sway roughly correlates to their power on the council but exceptions do exist. Taxes are relatively low and its people are expected to look after themselves. This has lead to a relatively large slum district forming on the northern side of the town.
Industry & Trade
Liberty is the primary source of trade goods local to the northern region of Geganna. Sugar cane, tobacco, chocolate and a variety of nuts are grown in plantations surrounding the town. These stretch to the borders of the northern jungles where a variety of alchemical, magical and other interesting materials are gathered by those brave enough to venture within.
A small amount of trade is made with the lizardfolk native to these jungles for other items including gold, gems, medicines and poisons.
Liberty also has shipbuilding guilds that service traders and other visitors.
History
Liberty was founded in relatively recent times by a mix of escaped slaves and refugees from throughout the Riven Lands. Due to being a fair distance away from other settlements, it has remained safe from invasion by outside forces. In recent times, the council that governs the area has been accused of consolidating power and eroding at the principles of democracy Liberty was founded on.
Tourism
With relatively lax laws and a bewildering array of cultures and people, Liberty has a reputation for being a town where one can enjoy any form of entertainment - above board or otherwise. Illicit substances, bawdy houses and gambling are rife.
Architecture
Liberty has a wide range of architectural styles used in its constructions. Buildings that would be seen at home in Khiji, Istabi, and throughout Sondrana are all jumbled together and painted in bright colours - a custom that has remained throughout its history. Vibrant pennants, flags and drapes adorn the constructions, especially in wealthier districts.
In stark contrast are the slums at the northern end of the town. Squat buildings have been built upon and extended with a variety of cheap building materials. While not coloured in the same, vibrant ways, the mix of building materials cause the slums to look like a disjointed mockery of the richer side of town.
