Farthington Settlement in Tarien | World Anvil

Farthington

When the Redstone River bends, changing its flow from south to east, the flooded fields of rice and cranberries greet travelers to Farthington. A town of 400, Farthington is renowned for its liberal views – especially its religious tolerance. Partially fueled by rumors that the Society of the Sacred Shadow makes its headquarters in Farthington, many in Warwick and Drakkar feel that it is perhaps too tolerant. King Rantak of Drakkar has gone so far as to denounce Farthington as an “incubator of heathens”. While the town does not have the soldiers of Gryphon's Crossing or the ruined palaces of Haverston, it does boast some of the most unusual architecture in Azermathia. Every building in the city is raised – built upon stilts to allow the waters of the Redstone River, when they overflow in the winter. One year, flooding was so bad that travel between these buildings was accomplished by boat for two months. Afterward, the Wise Women of the town decided that it would be best if the irrigation canals used to fill rice paddies and cranberry bogs were extended into the city. Now, Farthington has no streets – all travel is accomplished either by skiff, or by rope and wooden bridges connecting the buildings. In addition to their functionality, these stilts provide an outlet for the finest woodcarvers in the Hinterlands. Scenes of nature and mythology adorn the stilts, with the most intricate – and famous – adorning the seven posts that hold the foundation to the seldom visited Shrine of Tiras.
