Sleet Character in Tales of Justice | World Anvil

Sleet

unknown

Physical Description

Special abilities

Sleet can generate intense, narrowly focused cold like other "ice-themed" metahumans. He seldom does "big" effects like ice slides or walls. Throughout his average day, he uses his cooling power for little things like cooling a drink as casually as anyone else might brush their hair out of their face or tap their pencil on the desk.

Mental characteristics

Personal history

In September of 1998, a villain calling himself "the Weather Wizard" made his New York City debut by launching his "Forces of Nature" Caper. In the first stage, his metahuman consultant Frank Mantler a.k.a. Hypno to use his music-based psionic ability to paralyze all minds at a tech demo. Hypno and the Weather Wizard collected the new prototypes for use in a future heist at the NYC branch of Metropolis Mercantile Bank. In the second stage, expecting some of New York's "capes" to interfere, Weather Wizard deployed his "Four Elements" set of custom-designed henchmen.
No one knows what the third stage would have been, because the motley conglomeration of heroes who showed up completely destroyed Weather Wizard's entire team.
Frank Mantler died. Knight Thrasher arrested Weather Wizard and his henchmen, but quickly determined that the "Four Elements" were Weather Wizard's prior victims. They knew nothing about themselves save that they had spent some months in Keystone City learning how to fight "masks", that they had been created for Weather Wizard by someone else, that Weather Wizard commanded whether they lived or died, and that the solution to all of life's dangers is to accumulate enough wealth that all debts can be paid.
Three of the "Elements" went to a Bio-Investigations Limited clinic for advanced care. Firestar, still smarting from how close the Ice person came to defeating her, hauled him off to her mentor Dr. Jean-Claude Gironde in Metropolis.
He has irretrievable amnesia. Someone somehow wiped out all of his memories to the point that he had to be taught every non-instinctive life skill from how to talk and read to what various components of body language mean. The people who did this teaching were carefully bland: computer-like monotone voices, plain masks and bodystockings, very little deviation from scripted statements. The Elements were encouraged to treat their Element Master with affection and awe, while viewing anyone else as an obstacle.
This training did not work out as intended.

Employment

Now known as Sleet, this at-most-thirty-year-old man lives at the Gironde School and occasionally helps out on "Special Projects" assignments. He teaches math because someone on staff needs to be the math teacher, not because he has any particular affinity for the subject.

Mental Trauma

Sleet tends to not leave the campus on his own very often. When he does go out, it's almost always in the company of someone who tends to draw attention to themselves (and, therefore, away from him). The more familiar faces around him, the better he enjoys a trip to Alexei's Bar or area tourist attractions.
He still occasionally fantasizes about someone from his lost past recognizing him.

Social

Contacts & Relations

On a personal level, Sleet mildly dislikes Feral and Blackjack. He is dubious of their life choices in general. However, he is very glad to have Rissa back. He was the first staff member to argue in favor of making whatever accommodations she might need to help her feel safe at the School in the aftermath of her two year absence.
Sleet is careful around Thunderstrike because the boisterous, larger-than-life Wyldfire Agent draws attention into his orbit without conscious effort. He gets along with Don Blake okay.
If Steven Reynolds is in one of his "gotta collect all the tissue samples" moods, Sleet finds someplace else to be. He hates all aspects of medical care, including simple checkups and first aid. Once the subject gets off bodies and the inherent capacities thereof, however, he finds Steven a pleasant chitchat companion. He has not figured out how to get Martin Prinz talking, so he hopes that Steven or Thomas will and Sleet can drift into the conversation naturally.
Sleet's best friend on campus is Jerry Clasby and his best friend in the world is Bert Ridderhoff over at the NYC Campus.
