About the Music

There are two kinds of musical inspiration at play in my writing. The first one is the usual one.

Inspiring Music

What a good song! It makes me want to write about an old sailor and his personality!
— The author listening to Cruel Mistress, a song by Flogging Molly
We could divide this one in two ways...

Specific songs that have inspired plots, characters or concepts

Cruel Mistress inspired the personality and general concept for Hylmer, a member of the Irate guild

The rap battles used in Hamilton to represent the cabinet meetings inspired the use of payadas (Sung Duels) in the Kingdom of Merthiorn as the traditional way to solve minor conflicts.

This song by the most excellent band called D (Which songs narrate their own fantasy story!) was the inspiration for the character Kalimax, part of the Karte military.

A term used in this song turned into the informal name that some societarians use to describe the Hirschmall

This song is simply inspiring, nothing else to comment about it.
2023 edit: Well! Now Rosscot Camp has been written inspired by this song. See if you get the references in Rosscot's name!

This song sounds like something you could listen to at a gathering of the Horror Circle (And also, hey, my sister composed it!)

This incredibly alluring song inspired its namesake House of Pleasures, its owner, and several of its patrons. How productive!

Personal playlist to write about epic things

Whilst this playlist is not the one I usually use for writing (as it has too many distracting songs with cool lyrics), it is without a doubt the one that makes me want to write the most, whenever I listen to it.
Blind Guardian and Celtica Pipes Rock!, are two bands that particularly generate that effect in me.

Playlists to just sit down and write

TJ Trewin's playlist for his world, Melior, was perfectly crafted for being inspiring and delightful, without being distracting. I found it just before WorldEmber 2020 and never looked back.

My personal working playlist, a somewhat random mix of videogame music and progressive rock (I guess?) with some non-distracting random cool themes.
And then we have this other more specific and quite rare phenomenon that is however quite productive...

Songs with lyrics that didn't say what the author heard

What the hell are the "Alocardenas"? Mexico surely has super interesting names for its places.
— The author, trying to decipher the lyrics of Permítame, from Liliana Felipe.

This song about the history of Mexico City is at times difficult to follow, but the confusion ended up creating some cool names for the gods of Autonomism.

The character of Nancy as well as her tavern the "Horror Café" were inspired by this song. Except the song is about a harbour café.
