Paradisius

Welcome to Solaris, traveller! This is a slower-than-light science fantasy set in our own solar system.

This condition can make people cough up leaves and petals, but isn't directly harmful. It is more dangerous for the ship than the people. There are no images.
Paradisius is a ship condition caused by the paradise vine. Paradise vines are a highly invasive plant native to Venus, and a natural terraformer in their own right. When the paradise vines infest a location, they attempt to turn the ship into a Venusian jungle paradise. Not only are these jungles toxic to all but the Fei, they break down the ship, leaving nothing but a verdant wreck.   Compare and contrast to Cosmic Bloom and Crystal Infestation

Ship Symptoms

The paradise vines pose a great threat to all aspects of ship operation. The roots wedge their way between hull plates and panels, threatening the integrity of the hull. When bruised, the roots also secrete a mild acid that can quickly damage delicate electronics.   The vines themselves are no less damaging. They can break into conduits and clog them, grow into critical machinery, and in the worst case block off entire sections of the ship.

Crew Symptoms

CW: This section contains mild body horror.   It isn't until the paradise vine flowers that it begins to cause trouble to the crew. The spores it releases are narcotic and analgesic, inducing drowsiness and numbing pain. Breathing in these spores can also make the plant start to grow inside the lungs.   When paradise vine spores find themselves in extremely humid enviroments, such as lungs, they do not sprout vines or root systems but focus on drawing as much moisture through fresh petals and leaves. This irritates the host, who will usually cough the leaves and petals up.

Naughty plants! I would like to see them in their natural environment and not a ship. :D

Yeah! I'd like to write about the paradise vine themselves! Ideally when I have time to do a couple drawings for it!

There's something that particularly appeals to me, from a worldbuilding/story writing perspective, about plants growing out of people. It's a thing that can happen on my solarpunk planet, too. Both beautiful and horrifying.

Yess, agreed! I've been really fascinated with "beautiful" diseases in Solaris. I can't quite articulate why yet, but it feels very right for the setting.

I love this! Although the name of the plants sound lovely, this is an entirely horrifying experience. I can imagine a ship on a return trip from a routine mission, and the crew has to fend off the encroaching verdant menace. Rad.

Thank you! I really like the idea of coming across an overgrown shipwreck in space, and realizing too late what you're dealing with.

Oh fun plants! I love how they work (and I love in general all the dangers you have for your spacecraft - this is really making great use of the fact that life is everywhere and very resistant to space in solaris!) And you can even have dramatic hanahaki! XD

Yesss, this was 100% Hanahaki meets the idea of a overgrown space wreck. I'm really glad the themes are coming across, that they're all contributing to telling a story of what space in Solaris is like!
