Order of Nullification

The Order of Nullification is an arcane law enforcment guild that operates across the continent. The organization used to be a branch of the Conclave of Magi until the desertion, when it broke out as indeppendent and settled in its new headquarters in Vintia.

Structure

Order of Nullification operates in two fronts, court and law enforcement,Both arm are led directly by the order's coordinator, Order of Nullification who's office duties also include representation and dialogue with the many nations the guild operates in.   The nullifiers are appointed by the director to serve as supreme judges and experts in various arcane fields. Each nullifiers leads an office related to a different section of law or field, and is brought cases from adepts who serve the order as investigators and prosecution attorneys,   The law enforcement arm of the order is divided into a number of cells, each operating under the command of an abjurer who lead several apprentice, Order of Nullification. These cells operate both in the open and undercover, depending on the needs.   The lowest rank of the orders are the cadets, who's training last between 3-5 years, depending on the field they have been assigned to and their previous knowledge and skills. Like the rest of the organization, cadets are also expected to be combat able and are regularly deployed to duties. Those duties are mostly low risk assignments, such as guarding magical academies or manning a desk in one of the order's precinct.

Public Agenda

The order core principle is that protection from magical perils and dangers in the birthright of all sapient creatures, and such should be available as much as possible to the general public. The order achieves this by maintaining precincts and outposts in central locations of the civilized world and by regularly sending expeditions to towns and villages. The later is often done by hiring of capable adventurers who may call for the aid of abjurers should the need arise.

History

As a branch of the Conclave

The order started as a law enforcement branch of the Conclave of Magi, who at first used it exclusively to hunt their own rogue agents. After several decades of operating solely within the guilds rank, the conclave slowly extended their services to every branch they operated. Their inclusion into the regular stuff also allowed the nullifires to also take outside work with local law enforcement.   While operating all around the continent, the nullifires themselves were relatively unknown to the general public, mostly due to their inability to act without the complete supervision and command of local forces, who where often city guards. Along with that, the nullifiers were prohibited from mixing with the local population more than required by their duty or current operation. This cause the nullifires to be viewed as extreme, unreachable organization within the conclave, despite a public representative present in every conclave branch.   In 1205 nearly the entire branch force was gathered in Navara following an urgent request made by arch mage Verdian Tuvalius on behalf of the Dragonguard. The force was decimated by the Cult of The Shard who had infiltrated the city's Northriver district months, perhaps years prior. 320 members died during the initial attack and 78 more died during the cauterizing of Northriver, either by enemy forces or by soldiers of the Inquisition who were ordered by Kairoz the Andorian to cull the enite district. The surviving few, less than a quarter of the entire branch retreated back to the White Diamond Tower.   Two years later in 1207, The Ponderer decimated the city of Vintia during a rogue attempt to capture him. The nullifiers academy was caught in the blast, killing everyone in the compound, including all of the cadets in training. Along the casualties were also nearly all of the branch's top command, who where there to inspect new members for commanding roles to replace those lost in Northriver.

Voicing for independence

Following the catastrophes in Norhriver and Vintia, many in the branch blamed the arch mage and the Dragonguard for using them as pawns and for sending them unprepared to be slaughtered. Several strikes have occurred over the years since the event with some have even leaving the organization completely to pursue careers in the Pacificatores or join a national military. The act of desertion was considered extreme during the early 13th century as the conclave was the single source of magical research outside of expensive privatized studies; and those who left could never be brought back to its ranks.   These deserters often found cushy or profitable occupations outside of the conclave, as they where very high skilled workers. Those with experience in command have also proven to be efficient managers and leaders, tempting even more to leave the conclave, even with the threat of loosing access to their peers and even when their pay and conditions were greatly improved by the arch mage's directive.   By 1220, the nullifiers were still not able to build back to their original numbers and with most of the branch leadership dead in the events of 1207, their efficiency suffered greatly as well. Some prominent members cried out to Tuvalius, who prior to becoming arch mage was the previous leader of the branch, to take the organization directly under his wings and restore it. Despite the growing plea, Tuvalius was too occupied, or unwilling to take direct command of the branch once more.

The Great Panic and the Desertion

During the 1220's, The Second Salemizia of Ader was advancing in terrifying speed, culling town after town and decimating the local magical population. This led to a great panic and with the Vintian Imperium refusing to open the Great Wall many Kadian mages found themselves fending the inquisition by themselves, a large number of those were young children or teens with no prior training or proper magical education.   With the arch mage refusal to involve the conclave any more with the affairs of the Northern Alliance, many in the conclave called for his resignation. With their demands remaining unanswered, Oliverious Von Menatra, the leader of the branch declared he was leaving the guild to help locate and protect refugees, and that those who wish to help him would be welcomed and paid. While he was not the first to walk out of the Conclave, his leave is considered to be the final catalyst for the The Desertion. Von Menatra and his followers were declared as outlaws by the Conclave almost immediately with their resignation forcing Von Menatra to use his noble status and ties to ensure the safety of what was now his order.   No longer under the thumb of the Conclave, Von Menatra quickly began mobilizing his comands. He sent most of his followers to aid refugees who fled from Osternfel and Lake Kadia while he himself decided to staying Vintia and seek coucil with Queen Alexia Von Grieft.   In it's first couple of years the new order was operating through donations of House Von Menatra and their allies when those could be persuaded to support the cause. After two year he finally Von Menatra finally gained his audience and suggested the Nullifiers under his command would help to rebuild and reinforce order in the city of Vintia, should the queen recognize the order as an independent guild operating from Vintia. The queen approved, and with Von Menatra already a member of high nobility few dared to further question his withdrawal from the Conclave.

The New Order

Despite his noble status and the backing from the queen, few of the public were aware of the nullifiers role in peacekeeping operations and questioned the need for the order. Shifting the public opinion and establishing trust took the order more than a decade, and some argue that it succeeded only thanks to some high profile arrests that have been carried out during its early years of existence. Relations between the Conclave and the Order of Nullifers were never completely normalized, even after the first withdrew their charges. However, regardless of their opinion towards the other, the two must cooperate in order to combat arcane rogues and criminals.   The order continued to grow, with most of its new cadets from among refugees rescued in the past. As its ranks got bolstered, so did its mission expanded and the order began working directly with other law enforcement agencies, extending its reach once again beyond the Imperium to the rest of the continent. By quickly opening service branches across cities of the continent, the guild gain the attention and trust of the public, who now mostly perceive the order as the uttermost authority on magical dangers.
