Nereia Zazerac Character in Kobos | World Anvil

Nereia Zazerac

Madame Nereia Zazerac (a.k.a. Priestess)

"Nereia is the closest thing you'll find to an old world queen outside of Prunyth. I heard it told once that she tried to sell her soul but the merchandise turned out to be a forgery and the deal fell through."   ~Seak Beardo Von Shmit, of Abide and Seak's Bizarre Bazaar   Nereia Zazerac is the madame of the Whispering Bed, consort of Gormly Zazerac, and the mistress of at least a dozen of Krezzym's wealthiest citizens. The courtesans of the Whispering Bed jokingly refer to her as "high priestess," though the joke has gone far enough at this point that their mocking corrections have become less mocking and more serious.

Mental characteristics

Personal history

Nereia was born to a wealthy aristocrat and his mistress. When she was 16 she murdered her older half brother with a knife and inherited their father's fortune. Unsatisfied, she set out on her Becoming a year early.   Alongside her companions, she was tasked with ending a bandit problem. Rather than fight the small bandit troupe as her companions insisted, she hired them, had them kill her companions, and then moved the bandits into the city as a small troupe of footpads. With the bandit menace gone, the city assumed she was simply the last survivor of a successful Becoming.   The cult found her soon after, and she almost immediately began a wild affair with Gormly Zazerac. He invited her into his clan as wife, but she counter-offered to become his mistress and avoided monogamy. Through machinations, deals, and betrayals, she worked her way up to lead the cult. She increased her skills of diablerie, summoning ever greater Devils and signing distressingly egalitarian contracts with them.   At some point during her rise, she made contact with a particularly ambitious devil named Ghonerozzar, a brachina working for Glasya's vast spy networks. Nereia formed a friendship with Ghonerozzar based on mutual exploitation, with the devil teaching Nereia infernal magic and lore in exchange for human sacrifices. Nereia continued on with her private studies at the same time, eventually developing a ritual powerful enough to slay Ghonerozzar and consume her, an act which got Glasya's personal attention.    She forged a new contract, this time with Glasya herself; she would develop a ritual to deliver six thousand, six hundred and sixty six souls to Malbolge. If she succeeded, she would attain apotheosis as a living fiend presiding over the wreckage of Kobos itself to supply more souls to Glasya in perpetuity. If she failed, she would suffer the worst punishments Glasya, Princess of Hell, could think to inflict upon her.

Sexuality

Nereia is the mistress of many aristocrats, both male and female. She can be described the most important person in Krezzym that nobody's ever heard of.

Education

Nereia taught herself to read and taught herself infernal. Most of her basic skills and knowledge were acquired from stolen books as she was growing up, and were furthered beyond the ken of most mortals by fiendish tutors.

Employment

Ostensibly, Nereia is simply an extremely successful brothel madame. She does earn a lavish income from this, but in truth it's a front for two separate clandestine operations.   First, her temporal power comes largely from seduction and blackmail schemes carried out by her own assassin prostitutes. These women (and a few men) are trained to insinuate themselves into the lives of their targets, navigate household politics, and report any findings of note back to their mistress. Should seduction fail or more blunt action required, these agents are trained in violence, poisons, blackmail, and coverups.   Secondly, her spiritual power comes from a cult of Glasya. Meeting under the Bones of Barokaz, she hosts wild orgies, blood sacrifices, diablerist rituals, and scholomance training. Every form of perversion and taboo is explored in the Bones, and only desecration is held as sacred.

Failures & Embarrassments

Nereia is horrified of what she considers her "poor breeding", and despised her mother for being a low born. She hates her deceased father for not recognizing her merit and making her his heir.

Intellectual Characteristics

Nereia is Sanguine in the extreme.

Morality & Philosophy

Nereia is a Virtuist, and her narcissism motivates her to compare others to herself to determine their worth.

Taboos

Due to one of her many fiendish contracts, Nereia has a ban on entering consecrated ground.

Personality Characteristics

Motivation

Nereia is motivated by most of the vices imaginable, but foremost among them is Envy. She is even envious of her patroness, Glasya the Princess of Hell. She wants to ascend into true fiendom, and will stop at nothing to attain that goal.

Savvies & Ineptitudes

Nereia is manipulative and smart, and she usually has a backup plan for her backup plans.

Likes & Dislikes

Nereia hates losing more than anything, and sees life as a zero-sum game: if you're winning, she's losing.

Personality Quirks

While she typically keeps company with the worst, least moral aristocrats she can find, she has a weakness for good-hearted knights in shining armor as well as innocent young women.

Hygiene

Nereia's perfume is a subtle intoxicant to anyone who hasn't built up a tolerance for it, which she has.

Social

Religious Views

On the surface, Nereia is a practicing Deminite in service to Agasyl, scion of wealth.   In reality, she's the High Priestess of a cult of Glasya.

Social Aptitude

Nereia is a master of the social and political arts. In times past, she would have been a king's concubine and run the harem and the kingdom with aplomb and an iron fist wrapped in a silk glove.

Hobbies & Pets

Nereia, using foul rituals, has an interest in constructing Kalabons . She has a number of them stored in the basements and dungeons beneath her various houses of ill repute.
