Becoming
"Soon comes the time for you to choose your families. Soon comes the time to leave behind childish things and look to the future to who and what you will be. I give you this quest. I give you the gift of obligation." ~Excerpt from the Becoming ceremony.
History
The Maecodians follow a tradition that provides a strict division between childhood and adulthood. When they first arrived on the shores of Seaudyr, they were in a foreign and hostile land. They needed heroes to provide for the community, and to encourage that they developed the Becoming ceremony. It has been refined and redefined only slightly and gradually over the years.
Execution
There are three parts to the Becoming: The Ceremony wherein the quest is formally ordered, the Geas which the celebrants must fulfill, and the Naming where they celebrate their successes and choose a new name for themselves. At the Naming, they are often adopted into families or are involved in marriage proposals. It is not uncommon for Naming ceremonies to include a Blood Bonding ceremony as well between celebrants that came of age together.
Participants
While the community is invited and generally watches, only the Officiate (who performs the Ceremony ritual) and the Celebrants (who are the children to come of age) are actually required.
Observance
The Becoming is performed during the Spring Equinox.
