Kuiper Belt

What is considered even by spacers to be the extreme edge of the civilized "world", the Kuiper Belt is a collection of millions of small bodies, mostly ice, orbiting beyond and just within the orbit of Neptune in the plane of the solar system.
While mostly devoid of life, it has hundreds of automated resource extraction factories, and a couple dozen settlements, mostly research or military. A few more organic settlements do exist, notably of course Pluto, Eris and Makemake. It is rumored that there are a couple more secretive settlements posing as asteroids in the belt, but if there are they are very sneaky.

Geography

Mostly composed of little balls of ice a few km across, this is a place barely touched by the sun. One can travel through the belt for hundreds of years without encountering another soul or even a planetoid. However, it is a reasonable source of ice outside of gravity wells, making it rather cheap to ship. As such, it can compete with gas giant ice which is of course a lot closer.

Fauna & Flora

Nothing natural lives out here. A few experimental artificial life forms have been introduced, but few can survive on so little energy.

Natural Resources

Ice. Water ice, methane ice, ammonia ice. If you want ice, you go to the kuiper belt. It has its share of heavier materials, but they are relatively rare compared to in the inner solar system.
