Phoenix

The second base on Mars, Phoenix is still the second largest city on Mars, and an important economic and industrial center.

Demographics

The majority of the population are native martians. Most employed people of the city work for one of the many mining companies based in Phoenix.

Government

Phoenix sends 1 Senator and 12 Members of Parliament to Phoenix, chosen from its own local government which is a hybrid democracy where companies have votes as well. They have a central parliment, with one rep for every 500,000 people or so, but every company with its headquarters in Phoenix has as many votes as 10% of it's workforce. As such, the government has a strong pro-company leaning, which is often seen as a problem with the Phoenix system by people that don't live there.

Defences

The colony, like all Martian colonies has an extensive set of anti-meteor defenses. In addition, the domes are lined with superconducting wire, providing a powerful electromagnetic shield against radiation.

Industry & Trade

A series of large mining companies provide most of the employment and money in Phoenix. Material is shipped from their directly into martian orbit, or to smaller communities around mars.

Infrastructure

Phoenix has a orbital ring elevator and a primary high speed vactrain link.
Phoenix has a few well used pathways to the nearby ice deposits, as well as to some nearby mining operations.
The city itself consists of 4 2 km diameter habitation domes, as well as a large underground living area. There are a plethora of smaller drones outside of this core, providing food and additional housing, stretching out for around 15 km.

The mining corporations have what amounts to a stranglehold on the city, with political power and a lot of money.

History

This city was settled shortly after Utopia, as it was feared that not enough water would be available to the southern colonists. Phoenix eventually joined the PDRM in 2102, after the companies that run it were given a tax break.

Architecture

The core of the city is generally built in typical space colony style, mostly underground, with strong airtight doors. However, more modern additions are built under domes or in vast caverns, and eschew toughness and redundancy for beauty and ease of use.

Geography

The city is built on a vast flat section of Vastis Borealas. It is an area that was recently geothermally active, and so has groundwater and easy power generation.
