Session 35 Report

General Summary

Dorent 10 Snowdeep 834EA

Having dealt with the harpies, the Venturers aka SBRO (working title) helped the crew of The Improbable to throw the carcasses overboard. Zalla noted the harpies had created large gashes in the sails which meant they would not be moving far or fast until the tears were repaired. Several crew started lowering the sails for repair. Isla pulled Harthe, Pōtiki, Jodariel Balakin and Selestine Ignasia aside to apologetically inform them that they would not reach their destination for another day yet due to the damage. The party said it was ok and while Zalla coaxed the crew members who were injured in the attack down to the med bay, Selestine helped the other crew with repairing the sails, having become adept with repairing tent rips in her time in the military.   The party also got a message from Glynna Willowbank through their communication pebbles, asking if they had arrived yet. They said no. She said that it was good that she wasn't too late. She needed to let Jodi know that the sea water would indeed be bad for her armour but also that her shield would not work well for her underwater. She said that her contact would equip her with better armour suited for underwater. She also suggested they see if they can get some eye protection as the salt water would make it hard for them to see without it, and sting their eyes. They asked around and Stryker informed them that there was scuba gear on board the ship, but though they wouldn't need most of it, they could at least use the eye masks off it. Selestine also realised her goggles of night would also serve well as eye protection underwater.

The next morning, the party got ready, with Jodi leaving off her armour and shield. When they reached the deck, Isla said that they had arrived at "wherever here is".   Harthe (still disguised as Jessica) started to ritually cast water breathing on the party. While they waited, Stryker asked if they wanted the ship to stay put and how long for. After some discussion, Pōtiki asked them to stay for up to a week in case they did not return within a day. The party worried that Stryker might abandon them while underwater. He said he gave his word but they were not entirely convinced. Seeing the slight stalemate situation, Stryker reluctantly pulled off a ring from his finger and told him it was very special and that he definitely wanted it back. He handed it over as collateral. Pōtiki assessed the ring and recognised it as very magical so accepted it as adequate collateral. Isla commented that she of course would make sure the ship stayed as she wanted to see them again.   They then all jumped off the side of the ship, Jodi having jumped long before the others. They sunk down into the depths of the Murilda Ocean, landing in the outskirts of the underwater city of Ebitas. While there was little natural light from the sun filtered through at that depth, the city was aglow with the help of small bioluminescent creatures in caged lanterns and bioluminescent mosses of various colours lining the various structures. Bioluminescent jellyfish also floated above the city, casting soft light below. Barracuda watched the party from the edges of the city.   Having now landed and regrouped, Pōtiki passed Jodi Stryker's ring, saying it might help her as Stryker had commented about how it helped keep him safe. The party were then approached gleefully by a very excited and excitable water genasi named Akallyn who led them to the head guard, Caspia, talking non-stop the whole way. Eventually just outside the guardhouse, the party finally got a word in edgewise to properly introduce themselves. They asked her how they tracked time given they couldn't see the sun as easily from the bottom of the sea. She said they could just make out when it was day time and they'd sussed out how long between day cycles. She also commented that they don't get visitors much anymore and that she hadn't been to the surface world in a long time. Pō mentioned how they didn't even know there were underwater cities. Akallyn said there weren't many but that they used to have trouble with land dwellers trying to come to their cities without means to breathe underwater and drowning, and the families of the dead blaming the people of the underwater cities.   They went into the guardhouse, a large stone building, and into an office where a large merrow man was floating behind a large desk. He introduces himself and tells them Glynna had told him they were coming and that they would be able to help. He told them about how there is a kuo-toa cult based nearby that has been causing problems. Ebitas has been competing for resources with them and is losing the war of attrition. He tells them he has reason to believe that the kuo-toa have raised some formidable monster as their object of worship but will not let anyone near so no one knows what it is, but he worries that it could be powerful enough to wipe out the city if it wanted to. He wants to take care of it, but is having to focus resources on sending teams further afield for food and such. The barracuda guards are acting strange and antsy but are well trained enough to not flee. All other sea creatures as food sources have been giving the area a wide berth. He wanted to send the party to investigate and if possible, deal with the cult in exchange for lending them suitable armour and weapons for undersea exploration for their own quest. They asked him about shipwrecks and he talked about how ships didn't really come by anymore but there used to be heaps of them and said which way they usually were. He commented that it was the same direction as the cult and they came to realise that their quests may be interlinked. He then led them to the guardhouse armoury and equipped them with armour suitable for each of them that would also help them with swimming, as well as with a trident for Jodi and crossbows for Pō, Selestine, and Harthe. He stipulated that they needed to return the items when they were finished as per the deal with Glynna. They assured him that they had been told of this, though Jodi expressed disappointment in having to return the trident.   The party then headed out in the direction that Caspia had pointed out and soon found themselves on the edge of a ship graveyard. Venturing closer, Jodi was suddenly hit with an invisible force and the party found themselves in combat with a couple of water elementals, barely visible in the water. After dealing with the two elementals, Harthe, Jodi and Pō took a short rest while Selestine stealthily looted some of the ships. At the edge of her field of vision, she was able to see some flicker of movement and light. She reported back to the others and Pō had a look. Pō was able to see a few merfolk gathered over a shipwreck.   Harthe stealthed ahead to get a closer look with the others following a bit behind. The merfolk spotted Jodi and grabbed their weapons but did not seem to rush to leave their post. Harthe cast message while still hidden to ask what was going on and assessed that they were charmed. They said that they were protecting and Harthe gathered that they would attack if the party got closer. Harthe now closer to the shipwreck they were guarding, noted that the name ‘Tidal Crusader’ was emblazoned across its hull. Reading the name, Harthe was flooded with memories of boarding that very ship with his parents, his mother hurriedly scooting him below deck as his father paid the bewildered captain a hefty sum to set sail immediately.   He returned the party and updated them on the merfolk situation. Pō proposed skirting around the merfolk and continuing on their way but Harthe informed them that the ship they were guarding was the ship they were looking for. They then planned an ambush, with the plans to not kill but incapacitate them. The ambush did not entirely go to plan but they managed to incapacitate three of the four merfolk, with Jodi accidentally grievously injuring the fourth so that it was starting to bleed out. Jodi quickly rushed over and cast lay of hands to heal it and stop it from dying. They then tied all the merfolk up with the plan to deal with whatever had charmed them and come back for them.   The way clear now, they got to the Tidal Crusader and spotted a massive hole in the side that they realised must have caused the ship to sink in the first place. At the bottom of the hole, were the remains of several destroyed and charred barrels. Harthe, upon seeing these were taken back to the fateful night his family died. He was awoken in the middle of the night to yelling. He had run up on deck and spotted several fish-like people with spears and nets attacking the crew and your parents. Scared and enraged, he'd cried out and a blast of fire burst out from his hand. The creature he'd aimed at who was attacking his mother, dodged out of the way and the flames hit a bunch of barrels, which immediately exploded, and he'd blacked out.   Looking through the hole from above deck, they were able to see the lower decks, with the ship appearing a hollow shell with the lower decks having rotted away. At the bottom of the ship was a massive hole in the bottom showing the opening of a natural rift in the sea floor. Guarding the entrance were several creatures with fish heads with spears. Harthe immediately recognised the type of creature as the kind that attacked the ship years ago.
