Arielle Lowblade
Lady Arielle Lowblade
Early Life
Arielle was born in the harsh winter of 399KS, the only child of ser Wyllam Lowblade, the Lord of Serpent's Bridge, and his wife Anya Morshall, of House Morshall of Butcher’s Town, who died in childbirth.Arielle spent a large part of her childhood and teen years travelling between The Hollow and The City of Bayglen, where she served as a Handmaid to Marcyll Gaunt. While in the capital she met Maxar Crowler, a young knight-in-training, and second son of House Crowler of Allerton. The two courted and were married soon after his knighthood.
In 420KS, while Arielle was pregnant with her first child, both her father and her husband rode to Redwatch to attend A Grand Hunt, with tragic consequences, resulting in her becoming the Lady of Serpent's Bridge. In spring of the following year Valentianus Lowblade was born.
As her son grew it became clear that his willful temperament would benefit from a male influence, and so she married Tyral Drustan, the son of one of her minor Vassals. However, in 429KS, during a heated argument between Arielle and Tyral, Valentianus picked up a knife and stabbed the man in the stomach, killing him, leaving her alone with two children, Valentianus and Severin who had been born four years prior.
She sent Valentianus immediately to squire under ser Jorran Cratter, who was serving alongside his sister Ilyana as Stewards to House Tallman of Summerswind following The Razing of Summerswind.
In 432KS Arielle wed ser Sarrac Wayner, her former Sworn Sword who had entered her service in 420KS following the deaths of her father and husband. Shortly after she gave birth to Etienne, her third son.
In 435KS ser Sarrac died of food poisoning. Within a few short weeks she was betrothed again, this time to ser Jorran Cratter, who had become enamoured with her on frequent visits accompanying Valentianus. Two years later they welcomed twins, Yvain and Alaric. In the Spring of 439KS ser Jorran died painfully - the cause being determined as Whitesnake Venom from a bite inflicted by one of the snakes living around the castle from which it draws its name.
In 443KS a group from House Southbay of Southbay passed through Serpent's Bridge twice, going to and from The Hollow so that one of their number could treat the epidemic of Drowner's Lung arising from the Tourney earlier that year. During these visits, she began a courtship with ser Dawsin Bartholomeo, a knight from The Kingdom of Rotheval's Order of The Wyrm. They were married at The Festival of the Stormwyrm in The City of Southbay later that year.
In 447KS her son Valentianus suffered an injury while sparring with her husband, which quickly resulted in an infectio nwhich cost him the use of his sword-arm. While Valentianus was recovering Lady Arielle, fearing the wrath he might bear when he was well again, conspired with Lady Ophelia Foxworth-Hayford, Lady Hellna Gaunt and Lady Laycie Sawler to make several adjustments to her household - she arranged a marriage between Valentianus and Mysa Stanley from a Rothevalian Noble Family; she married Catryn Wayner, a long time servant of the household and subject of Valentianus' attentions, to ser Jallen Costayne; Duchess Hellna herself knighted ser Etienne Lowblade who then left to become Castellan of Faircastle, taking both his younger brothers with him to serve as Squires in The Foxworth Duchy.
In 449KS, on her fiftieth birthday, she gave birth to a daughter, Maxine Lowblade.
In 454KS House Lowblade of Serpent's Bridge sided with the secessionists in The War For The Foxworth Secession. Serpent's Bridge was sieged for several months by The Men-at-Arms of House Cray and The Urfine Rangers, who eventually stormed the castle. As part of Terms of the Surrender of The Secessionist Forces 454KS, Arielle was stripped of her lands and titles and supplanted by ser Agnes Ohill. She and her husband entered into the service of House Ohill of Serpent's Bridge as their Spymaster and Marshal respectively, while ser Valentianus returned with his wife to Rotheval.
Personality Characteristics
Representation & Legacy
Despite the explanations for her husbands' various deaths, the chain of tragically short marriages has left Lady Arielle with a reputation amongst the court of The Kingdom of Somercrag, with many referring to her and her frequent adoption of mourning-dress as the Black Widow of Serpent's Bridge.
