The Vargen Swamplands
Geography & Climate
The Vargen Swamplands are a vast, unyielding expanse of bogs, marshes, and thick forests. Situated between the Ivorian Heathlands to the south and the Firefang Jags to the north, the region is marked by its treacherous terrain and ever-shifting waterways. The land is divided into two major provinces: Dhab'Dhul, known as the Green Murk, and Dhigg'Dhul, the Red Mire. Both are rich in dangerous beauty, where life and death wrestle for dominance. Storms are frequent and unpredictable, lashing the swamps with torrential rain that turns solid ground into quagmire. Fog rolls in with the dawn, cloaking the land in an eerie veil that hides both predator and prey. The air is humid, thick with the scent of stagnant water and decay, while flammable swamp gases make open flames a deadly risk.People & Society
The swamps are home to a fierce and resilient people, a mix of Ogres, gaulans, and reclusive Bayooan swamp elves. The dominant ogre clans—Blade Ogres and Blood Ogres—are distinct in both culture and temperament. Blade Ogres (Dhab'Dhul): Green-skinned and disciplined, they live by a martial code, their strongholds built upon stilts to resist the creeping waters. They rule through honor and combat, their chieftains respected as both warriors and scholars. Blood Ogres (Dhigg'Dhul): Red-skinned and brutal, they are a people of war and survival, dwelling in crude but formidable fortifications amidst the bloodstained bogs. Strength is their law, and their chieftains rule by sheer dominance. Gaulans (Daijin Ethnicity): The Daijin are known for their ingenuity, having developed weapons like boomblasters and glass grenades that harness the swamp’s volatile gases. Their settlements are precarious, perched on raised platforms and strung together by wooden walkways. The region is largely independent, having resisted countless attempts at conquest. The ruling powers of the Blade and Blood Ogres formed the Pillars of Culture, a loose but powerful coalition that governs the swamps without bowing to outside influence.History & Warfare
The Vargen Swamplands have been a battleground for centuries, their inhabitants locked in a near-constant struggle against outside forces. The Highking’s armies once attempted to pacify the region, but wave after wave of soldiers were lost to the terrain and the relentless ogre resistance. Ug-Col’Ek, a ruthless warlord, ended much of the internal conflict by exterminating the Brute Ogre subrace, consolidating power but leaving the land forever marked by genocide. To this day, conflicts continue with the neighboring Ivorian Heathlands, as well as occasional incursions from desperate warbands seeking to claim what little solid ground Vargen offers. The rise of the Murkshroud Cult, a secretive sect worshipping an ancient entity known as The Drowned One, has further destabilized the region, their influence spreading through whispers and blood rites. The Vargen Swamplands are a place of both untamed beauty and brutal survival. From the disciplined Blade Ogres to the feral Blood Ogres, from the cunning Daijin to the enigmatic Bayooan elves, life here is as harsh as it is resilient. The land itself is an ever-shifting battlefield, where history is written in blood and survival is never guaranteed. The ogres of Galfin are similar to humans, even though the humans would say the ogres are savage and territorial, who is to say the humans are any different? The blade ogre race is the green-skinned ogres who live mainly in the swamps, the brute ogres used to live in the swamplands but were mostly exterminated in Ug-Col’Ek's genocide, few of the yellow-skinned ogres escaped the annihilation so an albino ogre is a rare site nowadays. The blood ogres are an aggressive red-skinned race living in the Vargen South but they also have ancestry in the Wastes of Nairgo. Ug-Col’Ek has taken over all swamp and forcibly ended tension by killing a whole subrace of his own kind. Many monsters wander the swamplands at night so it is best to travel in a pack or at least with someone slower than you. If you do get stuck at night, a torch might not save you. It could actually kill you as many areas of the swamp are under a fire ban as the swamp gas is very flammable. The main human population is of the daijin ethnicity. They are very intelligent for their lack of technological resources. Inventing things like boomblasters and glass grenades. Their weapons all utilize the explosive gases of the swamp. gained independence years after Ella's conquest. The ogres and people here were hard to rule over, from both the wealthy Skytracers and battle hardened Windslayers.
