Diarmuid

Prince, Sovereign Diarmuid (a.k.a. Dare)

Prince, and later Sovereign, of Nemel, who goes by Dare. They have the full Gift of Spirit Magic and the Plant Magic affinity of Elemental Magic; Dare is an excellent healer, which is handy as it is often self-applied. Dare duel wields swords, and is also skilled with a shield, bow, and spear; they have been known to duel wield spears as well. One of Dare's swords was gifted to them by a Yukionna who taught them to duel wield in the mountains above Glensura. One parent, Farrel, is Sovereign of Nemel and the other, Cormac, is Consort. Dare has a younger sibling, Leitis (Letty). Dare later marries Princess Azalee of Pelee, and they have one child, Prince Lynzee.

An Adventurous Childhood

Cadmus (Cade) and Dare are cousins and best friends; they grew up together learning and training. From the first, Dare was wild and reckless, so it was lucky that they took so well to healing at a young age; Dare also had Cade with them to watch their back- unfortunately, this made Dare feel even more invincible. When they were nine and enjoying a favorite past time, exploring the castle depths, they stumbled upon an opening down into the motte; up until this point, all living Nemeli had thought the motte was mostly solid. The kids got lost down there, and in their attempt to return to the entrance they discovered "lost" dragon-related artifacts, as well as signs of what appeared to have been their homes. There were legends of dragons in Nemel hundreds of years ago, and here was what looked like proof it was more than dragon tales. This discovery sparks a deep obsession for them. It also freaked out their parents as they were missing for almost 3 days. The two were able to survive by Dare growing food with Plant magic, and Cade pulling water from the ground with Water Magic.   A few years later, Cade's romantic-friend, Teague, an apprentice in the castle library, helps them find scraps of information on dragons in the library. They are curious as to why most of the information on dragons seems to have been purged from the libraries in Nemel; Teague tells them (half jokingly since no one leaves Nemel) they'd have better luck in the Free City of Bernice as it contains every book ever written. Following what they could learn, Cade and Dare take a trip to the stony hills northwest of Ballycay during a school break under the auspices of camping, but really it is to find more evidence of dragons. They end up finding the beginnings of what they were looking for and continue to visit as often as they can, without rousing suspicion, to excavate and care-take the former homes.

School Adventures

On Diarmuid's first squire rotation (they split Dare and Cade up in hopes they'll get into less trouble- Adventures! This fails miserably and they do the rest together) in 309 with the Order of the Frost up in Glensura, they meet a yukionna named Niamh who teaches Dare to fight in the way of the snow- duel wielding. And by "meets," Dare was caught out in a blizzard when they shouldn't have even been out and Niamh saves them instead of murdering them or letting the snow just do it. The yukionna also teaches them how to get snow sprites to protect a camp by building mounds for them. Being caught out in a situation where their gifts couldn't save him and he didn't have Cade to share the burden with finally brought him face to face with his own mortality. He also faces the impact his lack of thought could have had on his country. This tempers him, and although he still lives for adventure, he becomes less reckless and more thoughtful in all his actions.   Later that year, Cade's grandmother, Archon Nephele, learns that her older sister, Danae, has died. When she announces her intentions to attend the funeral, it causes all sorts of drama, but it is decided that the Sovereign Farrel will accompany and make the first state visit to Evestria - Ever. He gets to accompany as well as Tele, Brant, and Cade. Dare is excited for the opportunity to represent his country. He does so, and they still manage an adventure.   Despite Sovereign Farrel's initial objections, in 314, she allows Dare and Cade to leave the island for a quest, like knights of old, to look for dragons, of course. Brant sees them off and summons Operit and another Hippogriff that he ties to Cade's Planar Magic. They fly to the last known landing of the dragon Rhythmus and Prince Cadence Dragon Brother; Rythmus was the first dragon to disappear. When they near their landing site they see an explosion of light and investigate. The source of light turns out to be Princess Azalee along with Lady Jeslyn and Dayza. Learning that Rythmus was a dead end, they sail from the lakeside town of Cadence- although a dead end, a centuries old mystery that lead to the current isolationist stance of Nemel and his family's rise to power has at least been finally solved- across the lake to the Temple to Astrid and then ride to the Free City of Donachie. Once in Donachie they take another boat across the sea to the Free City of Bernice where they hope to find more leads in the great library; the Pelesians were heading to as well for similar reasons. Along the way the Azalee's visions of Ailbhe come to light. Dare is taken by Azalee, but after learning during their trip about how being Pelesian royalty works, assumes it's an impossible match- which for him probably makes him even more interested.   After the library, Dare and Cade decide to travel with the Pelesians to the Temple to Magic. Azalee speaks to her father, and head of the order, Ektor . He tells them that a dragon lives there, below the monastery, and they all meet Iain. Iain has no interest in helping them or leaving the cave; he's been raised here by the monks and fears the outside world. Azalee is able to find her and the cult base through her bond with Ailbhe. Jeslyn, confused by a cultist, tries to kill Dare and Cade. Iain gets a hold of himself and shows up to help- there had been a whole thing with Dare kind of shaming him into changing his mind. Jeslyn dies in the process of freeing all of the magical beings the cult has trapped there.   After hearing the truth about Azalee's unique parentage and the reasons she wants to avoid going home, he invites her to come back to Nemel with them and help resettle the dragons. Once Dare and Cade return to Nemel, bringing Azalee, Ailbhe, Dayza, Iain, and a butt-ton of dragons home with them, Brant and Cade get married. Adjusting to the new Nemel is rough. It's hard on everyone, but especially Dare and Cade as this was their whole goal, so now reclamation is pretty much their job. They create a council to oversee the process: Dare, Cade, Azalee, Ailbhe, Iain, and some others (not Day; she's there, but not into this sort of thing). Even with all the reclamation business, he still finds time to court and marry Zaz.   There is an attack on Oighearloch in 320 by a rampaging group of Jotunn; because they need the cold, it took a long time for them to make it back north. When they finally get back to where they used to live before they were kidnapped by the cult and everything is different they go a little crazy. Brant and friends head up there; there's just not a diplomatic option- they are literally tearing the town apart.   In 321, not long after the birth of his daughter, a released creature kills Sovereign Farrel. Dare's sister blames him for their mother's death, and it ruins their relationship. It also turns Letty further against the dragons and all other non-human intelligent beings. Dare is crowned Sovereign. His sister works to destabilize his reign.   Dare's sibling doesn't have children to raise Lynzee with, the way he was raised (and even if Letty did it would be a bad idea, considering), but he gives her the next best thing, setting up a nursery day room in the castle big enough for for her, Cade and Brant's daughter, Trinny, and Iain and Aili's children, Fionn/Deimne, Bryce , and Lyra. Zaz and Brant design, and execute with the help of mage-crafters, charms for their girls to wear that allow them to rough and tumble with the draglets and avoid serious injury. The magic of the charms fades with time, but as they become less effective the children are also growing and learning limits.
