Azalee

Princess, Consort Azalee (a.k.a. Zaz)

Azalee is the Princess of Pelee and later Sovereign Consort of Nemel. She has all of the magic Gifts (fully gifted)- thanks surprise dad. She's trained in combat to fight with her magical abilities both defensively and offensively (she can use earth armor, celestial blades, vine traps, among others). Azalee is the first of two daughters born to Queen Azadora; which was the first time in the history of her people that a Queen had two daughters. Her younger sister is Andora.

Growing Up in the Palace

Azalee's oldest friend, Dayza, "Day", is the first daughter to be born in her generation of House Roandra. Day was only four when Zaz was born, but she was still determined to protect her princess. It got to the point where the Queen just put a bed in Azalee's room for Day. Lady Jeslyn, who was born not long after Azalee and, as a Lady, also grew up in the palace, was known for coming up with mischief for her and Zaz, while Day was forever trying to keep them safe (like sneaking out to the Night Market). Azalee loves her younger sister dearly, but she has also always noticed the uneasy whispers that began after Andora was born. Azalee's nickname, Zaz, came from Dora trying to say her name as a small child.

Trouble in Paradise, Dragon Dream

At 21 Azalee became the first princess of Pelee, ever, to menstruate (due to the inherent star magic of being half Star Fae, the Queens of Pelee do not require their ovum to be fertilized to reproduce, although it is possible for fertilization to occur). Her menstruation was also a triggering event for Zaz' vision/first contact with Ailbhe (in a typical Spirit Magic Gifted being the menstrual cycle builds up Spirit energy, but in Zaz, 1/4 Star Fae, it also causes a build up of Star Magic; the loosing of her built up Spirit plus Star power is what made her a beacon for Aili). There were magical indications that the dragon dream was not actually a dream but a vision. The vision and its implications weigh on Zaz, but it's the bleeding that puts her in a panic and leads to her finally learning that she has a father (unlike a true Princess/Queen who would be produced asexually by the current Queen).

Finding Herself

Needing to get away, Jeslyn and Dayza, who is now a member of the Roses' Thorns, set off with Azalee to 1) hopefully unravel the vision by tracking down whatever they can about dragons and 2) work out what is going to happen with her life now that she is not fit to be queen.   They end up freeing thousands of magical creatures that had been captured by Life Blood Ministries for their magic energy. In the process they met Prince Diarmuid and Cadmus of Nemel who are on a quest of their own. Even though every time she looks at Dare Azalee gets the flutters, she doesn't want any entanglements to distract her, thus she attempts to keep him at an arms length, which is made more difficult when it becomes quite clear that they are after the same the goal. Despite her wanting to focus solely on fully figuring out her new, non-heir life (does anyone ever fully figure out their life?), without new complications, Zaz builds friendships with both Dare and Cade.   On their journey Azalee meets her biological father,  Ektor, at the Temple to Magic, which is where they find Iain, a dragon raised by humans. Also on the journey she more fully “meets” Ailbhe telepathically; after the first few contacts it becomes easier to find each other (at first it's only at the crest of her menstrual cycle). The relationship is risky- is Ailbhe really a friend or is she an enemy? Or is Zaz maybe crazy? Over time Aili becomes more like another sibling to Azalee. They find and battle the Ministry mages. In the battle they are woefully under-powered, even Azalee, until Dare starts to break the Simulacrum (simulacra) and free the bound beings. This is the tipping point; the base is destroyed, but Jes killed in the process.

After the Release

Azalee is heartsick over the death of Jeslyn, and she is still adrift in her own life- the adventure was a great distraction, but the fact remains she is biologically unable to fulfill the role she was raised for. It is due to these two factors, as well as wanting to give her little sister the space she will need to grow into her role as heir, that when Dare asks her, she chooses to travel north with Day, Aili, and the other dragons to Nemel. Additionally, Aili was very keen to have Zaz with her to help Aili muddle through their own struggles that come after being freed- the oddity of jumping hundreds of years into the future.   Zaz finds most of her upbringing suits her very well in navigating the ins and outs of the Dragon/Nemeli reconciliation, as well as her outside perspective. It also helped in preparing her for all of the running/flying around the continent they'd be doing to help the area readjust to The Release of all those magical beings. It is during this time that Zaz and Dare admit their love and mutual admiration.

Family and Responsibilities

Later, Zaz and Dare marry, and she becomes Sovereign Consort of Nemel (which is interesting because technically she is, genetically, the biological granddaughter of the line of their original Sovereigns). The consort-ship comes sooner than they might like, owing to the early death of Sovereign Farrel at the hands (claws) of one the beings they had freed. Azalee also grows very close to Cade’s spouse, Brant; it is due to their joint magical aid to the kingdom that Dare creates a new Chivalric Order, Order of the Falling Star, specific to those who fight primarily with magic and as such may not fit into the other existing orders. Zaz and Dare continue to spend their lives together helping the released beings to readjust to current day. Like his Sovereign parent, Dare dies earlier than they should.   Azalee and Dare have a child, Prince Lynzee, who grows up with Aili and Iain's children, Fionn/Deimne, Lyra, and Bryce, as well as Cade and Brant's child, Trinny. Day's son, by Brant, Admus, moves up to Ballycay when of age for the academy, and they all go to school together.   Being female and 1/4 Star Fae, Azalee does not age like her mother and sister (the Long Bloom), but she does age somewhat slower than most.
