Pelesian Ethnicity in Ereza | World Anvil

Pelesian

A melting pot of people. The region was known to the Nemeli people as Pelee prior to its settlement by the now Pelesian people. They are descended from a Star Fae and Nemeli union. All citizens of Pelesian descent are gifted to some extent with Star magic. They are very accepting of other peoples, but rarely put down roots outside of Pelee. Pelee is ruled by Queens, who may or may not take a consort at their discretion; the women of noble families are referred to as Ladies, and the main branch of each is headed by a First Daughter.   The Pelesian desire to stay near home is due to their close family ties: they are a matriarchal people; all of their queens, beginning with Rozalea, “The First Mother,” only daughter of Rosililly, a Star Fae turned human, and Cadence Dragon Brother (Nemeli), have the same parentage. The queens begin to reproduce asexually once a year upon reaching maturity (usually early 20s). Every child, except one girl, which always come late in their life (generally around the age of 50), is a boy. Little known, the Queens can, and some do, bear children fathered by a man. (Essentially, the Queen will ovulate, if the egg is not fertilized organically, the Star magic inside of her will take over. This is the price of the magic Rosililly unleashed when she chose to take a human form.) These “organic” children have widely gone unnoticed as, until Princess Azalee, all were male; their fathers have never been publicly recognized. However, even though fathering wasn't public knowledge, it was passed down to the Queens (beginning with Lilliandra who figured it out with help from her brother Loro), as every male child produced in this way has gone on to sire a line of female scions.   The queens age uniquely, staying in hale physical condition until the very end of their lives when they grow old suddenly (The Wilt) and pass on, around ten years. Queens can suffer illness like anyone else. The Queen and Princess generally only have a handful of common childbearing years prior to the current Queen fading. Each Queen will have about 50 children. The daughters of the sons born to Queens have their houses elevated to Lady status. They serve in the palace assisting in raising the queen’s children (their nephews and niece), as well as their own daughters, and administering the kingdom.   Originally, the children are sent out once they graduate university or trade school to travel and find a spouse to bring home- although these days it is more common to use a Match Maker. Pelee is very welcoming to all peoples- they need to marry off all those related kids. The standard rule is at least four generations of separation. Ladies of Pelee will generally not consider marrying a man with no sisters.

Naming Traditions

Feminine names

They tend to name their children variations of other first names in the family so there are a lot of repetitive sounds and letter combinations.

Family names

Noble families are born when the son of the Queen sires a daughter. The first daughter born to Prince(s) of Pelee becomes the First Daughter of that Queen's name. Any subsequent daughters head branch houses.

Culture

Major language groups and dialects

They speak the same language as the Nemeli, with some variation due to the 200 yearish diversion, but the drift is mostly in slang words and accent (like US and Australian English vs the Queen's English). Pelesian is more musical in pronunciation.

Common Customs, traditions and rituals

There is a tradition among some families to marry back in to the royal line every four generations.

Coming of Age Rites

It is common for young people to leave after completing their education to find a spouse that isn't related.

Historical figures

Rosililly (Star Fae turned "human") & Cadence (Nemeli), the founders of the ethnicity. Rozalea the First Mother, the only daughter of Rosililly & Cadence; first Pelesian to reproduce asexually (and non-stop), which really kicked off their ethnicity
