Grand Vailia

The first and foremost Ramerian Successor State, Grand Vailia is a pseudo-Republic ruled by a council of seven dukes.

A Brief Overview

Grand Vailia is the largest nation on Rameria in terms of habitable surface area. People of all races live here, human and otherwise, with only little prejudice due to the incredible influence wielded by the Trade Guild, which also provides one of the dukes. They value money over all else, using often unethical means to increase their profit margins. They are one of the main trade partners of Hell, buying Daubmen en masse.
The Guilds also control the Vailian Trading Company (VTC), a privately owned company that holds considerable overseas territory and imports all manner of goods back into the Motherland.
They are actively attacking Casteria on St. Waidwen's Folly to take over their resource-rich posessions there. They clearly had the upper hand in the skirmrishes up to now, and experts fear escalation into a full-scale war.

Founding

When the Godhammer was detonated on the 14th of , the Merchant Dukes of the Eastern Provinces refused to further support the war and formed the independent Ducal Council. Seven days later they proclaimed their independence through the Renouncement of Imperial Authority, using a mercenary army to take over large swathes of mostly unprotected land belonging to the Ramerian Empire under the leadership of Colonel Altea.
Their expansion was halted in the Month of when the Empire was officially dissolved and countless minor nations emerged, officially beginning the bloody Independence Wars.

Culture

Vailian Culture is strongly influenced by money: it is considered the best way to gain influence. Combined with a strong sense of honour, this results in a meritocracy that is oftentimes riddled with corruption.
People of all races and walks of life can attain almost all positions, save for the highest ones. However, they are also very apathetic to the point where charity is rare and they don't much care for the suffering they cause in their pursuit of riches, reasoning that if someone isn't able to provide for themselves, they do not deserve it. So while they aren't inherently racist, they treat their native subjects with contempt and use severe punishments for not meeting their quotas.
The Vailian caste system is very similar to that of the monarchies, yet they do not recognise a spiritual estate. It consists of Serfs, Freemen, and Merchant Lords instead.

Architecture

Vailians build wide rather than high since their territories are mostly sparsely populated, making space not much of an issue, while at the same time the ground is oftentimes soft and yielding, making buildings far more likely to collapse if too much weight is distributed over too little surface.
They love to richly decorate their houses: whitewash is applied to almost every wall, and whenever affordable, another layer of paint is applied on top of it to give them vibrant colours. This is a big distinguishing factor to the rest of Rameria, as most other nations currently experience an economic downturn and are therefore not as prone to spending money on frivolous things.

Diplomatic Relations

Vailia actively imports from the New Republic and the Kingdom of Azgaar, mainly Stonemen and Nevercold Brass from the former and more general goods with the latter.
The less advanced nation of Beordan is under their protection, yet the local leaders are recently aspiring for liberty. This has forced Vailia to largely cut them loose, no longer demanding tribute but simply stipulating that they may only trade with Grand Vailia itself.
It is engaged in a deadly border conflict with the Kingdom of Casteria, initiated by Vailia in the hopes of taking over the entire island down the line. There has been no fighting on the mainland yet, as per a previously established truce, but troop movements of Grand Vailia suggest that they are poised to strike. They also embargoed them.
The VTC is in active talks with the various tribal leaders of the Vatelles to acquire more of their land and use their people for labour.

Trade

The VTC grants Grand Vailia access to otherwise exclusive resources like cotton, tea, and spices. They trade these with other Ramerian nations and private individuals to substantially bolster their treasury, enabling them to sustain a huge navy.
Its main import is considered to be the Daubmen from the Devils, a practice condemned by the Temples yet much-lauded by the traders who profit greatly from them.

Military

Navy

Their Navy is the grandest on all of Rameria. After the Xingqin War most of the Ramerian military vessels were sunk, with the few that remained having been in ports in Grand Vailia, as these were the closest to the enemies. Further drafting the larger ships of traders in exchange for overseas territory gave them an initial boost which they steadily build on ever since.
They mainly use large Two-Deckers, warships with two rows of deadly guns, bolstered by smaller and faster frigates, only able to sustain such a rapid expansion through their trade.

Army

The army itself is semi-professional: most soldiers are simple men who were drafted for the border conflict, yet certain Elite Units make up a considerably smaller standing army.
Every citizen either needs to pay a considerable special defence tax or train with a longbow every Sunday for at least three hours. This is done in groups of up to seventy men on local fields and unexplained absence is considered desertion.
