Protectorate of Beordan

Beordan is a Protectorate under Grand Vailia. The dangerous native predators and frequent natural disasters that plague their island are part and parcel of everyday life there.

Founding

The Protectorate was established by the Ramerian Empire in 512 in an effort to get access to the valuable resources lying dormant there and to increase their potential manpower pool.
In a bid to better integrate them, the local administration was always handed over to loyal natives while various programs encouraged Ramerians to settle there, resulting in a mix of cultures often referred to as Beordan-Ramerian.
This strategy has proven highly effective and in 663 , before the Empire's dissolution, Beordan was almost completely integrated already.
However, after the disastrous Godhammer Incident, there was a split in politics between the Collaborationists, who invited the Ramerian Successor States to visualize them once again in order to share their technology and economy with them, which the local traders dearly depended on, and the Traditionalists, who were driven to militancy in a bid to determine their nation's own fate, even if it be one of economic downturn, denouncing the Ramerians for bringing about the deaths of so many young Beordana in a war they had no interest in.

Geography

About 80 percent of the population lives in the North-Eastern part of the island - along the coast and rivers - even though it makes up for just about a fifth of the landmass. The rest of the island is a mixture of mountains and dense forests, too thick for large roads, leaving the tribes that are living there to be isolationist and fiercely traditional.
While the Vailian Trading Company wields its vast influence over much of the denser populated areas, their armies have yet to conquer the thick vegetation, beaten back by the worse-equipped and outnumbered traditionalist levy force of the 'Forest Huntsmen', whose extensive knowledge over the terrain effectively halted the Vailians who were mainly used to plains, hills, and mild forests.
This is to their great dismay, however - even though controlling most of the population, the rare minerals and plants they crave for their extensive trading network are mainly found within these confines, leaving the local governor to constantly plot against the traditionalists.

Diplomatic Relations

The Protectorate of Beordan was rather discontent with the change of masters when Grand Vailia usurped the position from the old Empire and even tried to revolt against them following various imposed levies, yet they put it down.
The Vailians attempt to rule over them a lot more directly than the Ramerians did and even started appointing their own for local positions to ensure loyalty while steadily raising their levies. However, the local chieftains banded together against them and burnt down the Vailian Embassy in Beorgford. While they managed to get their overlords to drop the levies, it is an uneasy truce and the locals are afraid that Vailia will return with a full-blown occupation force.

Military

Navy

Beordan doesn't have a state-owned Navy but rather a multitude of fast, small scouting boats and a few frigates owned by coastal settlements to combat pirates. As such, they have no actual war- or trade-navy, making them vulnerable to invasions.

Army

The Beordan Army mainly consists of townguards: they were renowned for their mountain and forest specialists that would be used by Rameria to great success in these terrains, yet after the Xingqin War, they officially disbanded their army and refused to let their men fight for another nation again.
The renowned Forest Huntsmen, however, are still active despite their official disbandment, defending the forests from foreign invaders, as the vast majority sided with the Traditionalists after the war.
