Azurbay (ˈɑ:ʒərbeɪ)

Azurbay is a charming and scenic port town nestled in the northern region of Ravia, renowned for its beautiful bay featuring strikingly blue waters that inspired the town's name. During the hard winters, the bay often freezes into a thick, glassy sheet of ice. The strong currents beneath the frozen surface create a dynamic environment that pushes the ice sheets against one another. This natural phenomenon occasionally results in the formation of blue ice spires that rise from the bay, resembling the shimmering ice formations found in the distant Frostcrest plains.   Situated on the windward side at the base of the imposing Shatterscale Mountains, Azurbay holds the distinction of being the northernmost settlement on Ravia. Tand is renowned for its stunning bay, characterized by strikingly blue waters, which inspired the town's name. The residents of Azurbay have developed a robust local economy primarily centered around seafood, with North-Ravian lobsters and Basilisk Crabs standing out as their main export. They also mine metal ores from the mountains, which also contributes to the town's economy. However, these economic activities are heavily dependent on the seasons, as the port can become completely inaccessible during the winter months when the bay is frozen solid.   To facilitate trade and ensure the flow of goods, Azurbay has established a well-constructed road that winds its way directly to the Shatterscale Mountains pass. This strategically designed route allows for efficient transport, enabling the town to maintain vital supply lines during the harsh winters when exports dwindle.

Industry & Trade

Azurbay predominantly thrives on the export of the North-Ravian lobster and the basilisk crab. These crustaceans are highly sought after, but due to the extreme and unforgiving winters that envelop the region, fishing activities are restricted to the warmer months of the year. The port becomes completely frozen during the winter, halting all maritime operations.   In addition to its marine exports, Azurbay also engages in mining within the formidable Shatterscale Mountains, located in the town's vicinity. Here, miners painstakingly extract various metal ores from the rugged terrain. However, the process is labor-intensive and slow, as the hardened rock poses significant challenges for extraction. Once they manage to gather ore, the town relies on ground routes to transport these resources during the winter, since the port is inaccessible. The mining efforts also yield crushed rocks and stones—a versatile material that is exported for use in construction and other industries that require gravel.   While the seafood industry is the primary source of revenue for Azurbay, the mining operations play a crucial role in supporting the community throughout the entire year, including the winter months. Together, these industries form the backbone of Azurbay's economy.

Infrastructure

Port

The port in the town has undergone significant reinforcement to withstand the powerful ice sheets that push against it during the harsh winter months. Previously constructed from wood, the original port was vulnerable to severe weather conditions. One particularly brutal winter resulted in an unprecedented accumulation of ice in the bay, which ultimately led to the complete destruction of the wooden port.   Once the ice melted and the winter season came to an end, the town had to rebuild its port. This time, they opted for a more durable and resilient design, choosing to use reinforced concrete. However, this new construction could not be easily adapted to accommodate significantly larger vessels, the concrete structure now poses limitations.

Energy

Solar energy tends to be less efficient during the winter because snow accumulates on solar panels, preventing them from capturing sunlight. Additionally, the cold temperatures can further reduce their overall energy output. As a result, the town relies on alternative energy sources. While there is some reliance on wind power, the main energy source for the town comes from neighboring cities, providing a more consistent and reliable energy supply throughout the year.

History

Azurbay originated as a modest mining settlement in the year 952, nestled among rugged hills and coastline. Its development was stunted by the unforgiving cold weather and severe winters that deterred many from establishing permanent homes in the area.   Despite the challenges, Azurbay has maintained its identity as a mining town, primarily extracting metal ores from the base of the Shatterscale Mountains. However, the town's economy diversified during the warmer months when local fishermen can fish for lobster and basilisk crab.   To this day, Azurbay retains its quaint, rustic charm, combining its rich mining heritage with a flourishing marine harvest, reflecting the resilience and adaptability of its inhabitants in the face of nature’s challenges.

Points of interest

Bay

During the winter months, the ice covering the bay can become exceptionally thick, often presenting a challenge for the town's efforts to maintain access to the port. Despite the community's desire to keep it open year-round, the significant buildup of ice makes breaking it apart an arduous task. Consequently, the town has opted to close the port for the entire winter season to prioritize safety and resource management. As a result, the once-bustling harbor turns into a picturesque ice skating rink, providing a beautiful outdoor space for residents to enjoy. Families and friends gather to skate across the smooth, glistening surface, creating a lively atmosphere filled with laughter as they embrace the winter wonderland.

Mochi's Mocha

Mochi's Mocha is a charming little café nestled in a line of shops along the shoreline of the town. This cozy spot is a haven for coffee lovers, offering a delightful range of beverages, but it truly shines with its specialty mochas. Customers can indulge in rich and creamy mocha concoctions crafted with great care, using high-quality coffee beans and artisanal chocolate. In addition to its famous mochas, the café features a unique dish called mochi. These soft, chewy rice cakes come in a variety of flavors and fillings, catering to both traditional tastes and adventurous palates.   The café is lined with shelves filled with a variety of books, inviting guests to sit back, sip their beverages, and immerse themselves in a good read. Visitors are encouraged to bring their favorite books to share with the community, leaving behind a piece of their personal library for others to discover and enjoy.
