The Scribes Organization in Dawn of Others | World Anvil

The Scribes

The Scribes are an organization dedicated to the preserving and transcribing of books. They maintain the New Medical Library that is known for housing the majority of the perserved books from the time before. Most of these books are on medical topics. They also assist with the keeping of important resords within Camp Hope. They provide transcription services and sell copies of the books that are maintained int he library. The Scribes only deal in Camp Hope credits. This means that anyone who wishes to purchase books from the library through Musty Pages will need to first either engage in trade or work as a Bounty Hunter to earn credits. The result of this is that the New Medical Library is a major driving force for trade and income for the camp. Because of this, the Scribes are regarded highly and are respected for the work they do.

Diplomacy

Generally, Scribes are well regarded with the camp. They are considered people that help the economy and provide important services to the camp. That being said, they are not particularly involved with the camp's social or political affairs which generally means that they fade into the background. This means that while people have a positive view of the organization, they aren't likely to be aware of their activities or invested in their agenda.

All of the records of the camp are handled by members of the Scribes. This means that members of the Scribes have an intimate knowledge of the activities within camp as well as having access to the historical records within the library. Those within the Scribes are knowledable and they believe that this grants them power.

Feature: Library Access

Though others must often endure extensive interviews and significant fees to gain access to even the most common archives in your library, you have free and easy access to the majority of the library, though it might also have repositories of lore that are too valuable or secret to permit anyone immediate access. You have a working knowledge of your organization's personnel and bureaucracy, and you know how to navigate those connections with some ease. Additionally, you are likely to gain preferential treatment at other libraries within other camps, as professional courtesy shown to a fellow scholar. Other camps generally consider the Scribes from Camp Hope to be the elite record keepers and will grant you access they might not otherwise. Lastly, as a member of the Scribes, you are generally granted access to the records being kept by other organizations within the camp.

"The pen is mightier than the sword" -Edward Bulwer-Lytton

One glance at a book and you hear the voice of another person, perhaps someone dead for 1,000 years. To read is to voyage through time.
– Carl Sagan

General Biases

These are the biases that members of this faction generally have.

Positive Biases

  1. They favor people who are intelligent. This bias will be triggered if a character has an Intelligence score of 12 or more.
  2. They are interested in others who are knowledgable about history. This will be trigger if a character has a history skill of +10 or more.

Negative Biases

  1. They do not tolerate those who are abusive to books or records.
  2. They dislike those who are ignorant. This bias will be triggered if a character has an intelligence score of 9 or less.

In the current era, to make adjustments in worldly interactions one must have knowledge. It is impossible to remain on a true course without tracking where you have already been.

Without books, there would be no way to hold people accountable. Without books, past knowledge would be religated to the realm of fairy tales and myths. Without books the whole truth about life would be left to our imaginations because it would be little more than a guessing game. Books are the foundation of society.

Allies

The Scribes serve as the record keepers. They hold all the medical texts and learning materials that the Doctors need to learn their craft. Additionally, the Scribes keep copies of all the medical research that has been completed, making it available to future generations.
