Pulp and Sundry - 721 N Garrison Street
A used book store specializing in pulps, dime novels, etc. The selection is good but not great, and one has to wonder how they manage to stay in business. "Old JerJer", Jerry Wilkens, does little but sit on his stool behind the counter all day and deal with the few customers he has. He seems content to sit and watch people walk by outside his shop all day long.
The way Wilkens stays in business is a clandestine hidden door, a leftover from the days of Prohibition, that leads down into a secretive room where he openly sells pornographic books, magazines, adult novelties, and the rare 8mm film reel. The backroom, jokingly called the Pump and Smutry by local college frat boys, is one of New Jerusalem's best known secrets. Wilkens pays a small stipend to the regular beat patrolmen. The police know it exists; they tolerate it because it never causes them trouble.
Entered down an unmarked basement stairs. A doorman opens a window in the door and decides who can enter. The Doorman, Sam Joffe, always admits strangers accompanied by a regular patron. Established regulars come and go as they please. Under no circumstances are women, accompanied or not, ever allowed in here. Expect to spend 25 cents to $5.00 or more depending on quality, availability, and the particular 'flavor' of smut you are seeking.
Business hours are from noon to 9 p.m.; closed Sundays.
