Hill Side Cemetery Construction - 498 West Colwen Street
This entire area has been acquired by a combination of direct purchase and eminent domain for the construction of Hill Side Cemetery, New Jerusalem's newest graveyard. The houses around this area are empty and gutted, many with internal supports removed, all in preparation for demolition and removal. The new graveyard is to be finished, consecrated, and opened in 1956 and will be bordered by High Lane, West Derby Street, Browne Street, and West Colwen Street. The new grounds are to be enclosed by a tall iron-wrought fence with main gates opening on West Colwen Street.
Crawling up the grassy hills, trees lean at odd angles, their outstretched limbs casting great black shadows, giving the place a perpetual feeling of night-time. The surrounding gutted houses give the whole area an abandoned and spooky atmosphere. The area is fenced off, but access is easily had, and the empty homes make for a serious danger to small animals, pets, children, and young adults who might be foolish enough to enter any of them.
