Shepherd's Rest
Widely known as the most impoverished district within the city, Shepherd’s rest houses the bulk of the human population. Most of the residents here live in somewhat ramshackle accommodation made up of older stonework salvaged from collapsed parts of the walls. Often families can live in one or two-room accommodation, with shared amenities such as communal toilets and wells. Houses are built overlapping each other and to a low standard, leading to frequent dangerous wall collapses and poor living conditions.
Humans find employment in many other areas of the city, but jobs within the ‘Rest are relatively scarce.
As part of efforts by The Shepherd to improve conditions for the Humans in the city, a number of Social Housing projects were undertaken. These were designed with the help of the Builder and allowed for large numbers of humans to live in relative comfort while taking up a small footprint. These developments are still some of the best condition structures in the district due to the quality of the work that went into them, however the occupants do not live the life the Shepherd hoped for them. These houses are now known as the Shepherd’s Pens’ due to how many people can fit into them.
On the edge of the Rest are The Stacks, massive chimneys that output smoke and fumes from the Smithing district. Those unfortunate enough to live next to the stacks often suffer significantly shorter lifespans and debilitating health issues, Adjacent to the stacks are entrances to tunnels that lead to the Smithing District.
While many citizens look down on Shepherd’s rest as a poorer district with little to offer, it does boast many delicious, if humble restaurants and inns. These include Pok Choice, a restaurant that specialises in beautifully seasoned vegetables and noodles run by Tak Shones, a young, enthusiastic human who talks far faster than he should. The restaurant is run out of a small apartment in one of the pens, and can only sit about 12 patrons at any one time.
Also in the area is Ale and Hearty, a small bar in what can charitably called a shack. The owners are a Dwarf named Alyn and his adopted Human Daughter, Helena. Their main appeal is their home brewed Ales, featuring some deep flavours. Helena also always has a hearty stew on a stove, enhanced occasionally by some select brews.
