The Last Bastion

Bastion is a sprawling metropolis, set atop a vast plateau, looking down on a barren wasteland around it. For miles in every direction all you can see is dust, stone and potential death.
Formerly known as The Last Bastion, records put its founding at over 1,500 years ago, during events that destroyed most of the world around them. History tells of a former pantheon of gods known as the Elemental Lords that regularly mingled with the mortals of their domain, but these are no longer recognised or worshipped as they are believed to have abandoned the world when they were needed most.
Only the Betrayer has any sort of name, labelled as the one that rose up and began devastating the world. Fire and disasters spread, the land became barren and the sky darkened for several years. Following the disasters, armies of monstrosities came to slay any beings that survived. While this happened, none of the other Elemental Lords were seen to intervene or protect their people.
Most of the world was completely destroyed and rendered uninhabitable, until a cabal of powerful mages, scholars and artificers gathered together at the final city in the world and created a powerful new form of magic, utilising the souls of the untold millions who had died to banish the darkness, end the destruction and protect the final city which was named The Last Bastion.
This magic centred on a powerful item called the Soul Anchor, an enormous monument which draws the souls of the dead from the world and somehow not only banished the destructive god, but kept the land around the city from being tainted. This Cabal formed the First Council and shaped what was to become simply Bastion. The cost of keeping the city and it’s lands habitable was high, and the Council decreed that none of those survivors outside the city could be granted access for fear of overstretching their limited resources.
Today, the First Council continues to rule Bastion and its 300,000 inhabitants of dwarves, elves and humans.
