Arcane Academy

On the Western side of the plaza, and stretching back for several hundred yards is the Arcane Academy. Their motto carved above the doorway is ‘Salvation through Learning’ The facade looks different to every other structure in the city, made from a weathered stone to those found in the local area and carved into incredibly elaborate spires, towers and reliefs. All of this reveals to those educated in the city’s architecture that the Academy’s facade predates the Cataclysm.
Of particular interest to those with an arcane education are 8 statues representing the major planes above the entrance, including each of the Elemental plains, the Ethereal Plane, Pandamonium, the Material Plane and The Abyss. There is a space for a ninth statue representing another plane, but all that remains is a small amount of unidentifiable stone at the base where it should be standing.
Within these halls all mages and individuals with magical aptitude are trained. Many end up remaining within the Academy, carrying out research into the workings of the Soul Anchor and other creations by The Scholar. Though they would loathe to admit it, the centuries upon centuries of research have revealed little of the mysterious magics that The Scholar harnessed although progress in other areas has continued. Academy Scholars may not overtly state their goals, but their objective is to reclaim the world once lost by harnessing lost magics.
Those that don’t stay with the Academy often end up working for the Skirmishers or Guard, utilising their magic for more practical purposes. Admission to the Academy is very strict, with applicants needing to show an aptitude for either Arcane or Divine Magics. Students are normally admitted at the age of 11, and study for up to fourteen years before graduating. Funding for the Academy is entirely from the Council, with the understanding that students will benefit the city in the long run.
The Academy is overseen by Archmage Aelor a relatively young elf considering the prestige of the position. She is nearly 150 years old and advanced through the academy itself in a record pace. Aelor is quite short, measuring at just over five feet tall. She’s normally seen in dark coloured robes with silver highlights. Her hair is raven black, shaved on one side and running long down the other. Those with magical aptitude consider Aelor to be a prodigy in both Arcane and Divine magics, something unheard of within the Academy. The faculty within the Academy initially balked as such a young woman in charge of the most prestigious institution in the city but her diplomatic acumen as well as her undeniable magical talent paved the way.
