Medical Wing
Each of the schools of magic has its own faculty, headed up by a Dean. 27 years ago a new wing was opened in the Academy dedicated to medical magics. Within this wing members of the public can seek medical care from the students and faculty, although the number of patients they can accept is far less than those in need. Mostly they treat minor injuries and accidents, but there is a ward for the treatment of mental health issues too. The Guard often bring those considered too unstable for trial to this ward for care and restraint for the protection of all.
The ward is a long, drum shaped building, with a central corridor with a dozen doors on each side. The walls are limewashed and roughly textured but well made. Inside the corridor and patient chambers are small round portals in the ceiling containing opaque glass giving the rooms a diffused sense of light and a lack of definition.
Each door in the corridor leads to a small chamber where a patient stays and is treated, the opposing walls curve smoothly upwards, giving the rooms an airy feel in spite of the clinical environs. Each room has a small simple bed and wooden furniture.
At the end of the corridor is an open ward for more minor patients with numerous cots and student healers running about hurriedly. Beyond that is a single chamber used as a theatre for major operations, it contains a large, smooth wooden table and has a small raised platform for observation.
The final section of the medical wing is a darker series of 6 cells, each with solid oak doors and small metal portals that can be opened for observation or to pass food through. The cells here all contain heavy beds that have been affixed to the floor with strong, leather restraints. Within these chambers is Alicia, Livanya’s mother.
The Dean of Divine Magics is Keyra Athelar. She is short, a little chubby for an elf with a brown bowl cut. She is normally seen in the standard brown or grey robes of the academy, with a white sash denoting that she specialises in Divine Magics. When she isn’t at work she may be seen in dark loose linen trousers and a white blouse. Keyra was once male, but presents herself as female. The Archmage assisted her in transitioning by developing some new transmutation magics, and because of this Keyra is incredibly loyal and grateful to the Archmage.
She is very friendly but one of the least experienced Deans at the Academy. She specialises in healing magics, but has a wider understanding of divine spellcasting as befits her position. Her classroom has 12 desks, six on either side, with three chairs at each. Occasionally the class will be reconfigured with the desks moved to the side and medical tables brought in for treatments to take place on cadavers.
Images of anatomy and the known plains adorn the walls. At the back of the classroom is a small office with a comfortable leather chair for her and two wooden chairs for visitors. Her passion is discovering new healing techniques for use in the field, although she is far too timid to go out into the wastelands herself. Her beliefs that power her abilities are built on compassion for her fellow citizens although Keyra does not have specific political leanings. As such Keyra is more likely to be sympathetic and understanding to different races than many of her peers in the Academy.
