Korana War

A war between superpower and backwater

You once asked me if I have ever seen it, I told you a lie of course, everyone else on this hellhole would. The truth is, I have seen it, as have my brothers, my mother, my friends, and everyone else, and yet you never have, despite your persistence aboard this rock.   I once thought it was an idea, inspired by our resistance against subjugation, a story told to eager children, desperate for a hero to inspire them. But I have seen it, a thousand times over. I watched it fly above our skies not a day prior to your arrival, and I have come here today to tell you the real truth about our heroic vessel. You may bring all your ships to bear, the full might of the grandest Navy in the Galaxy's history, but you will not win. For the Phantom will remain, watching, waiting, ready to strike wherever you least expect. An eternal thorn in the side of the Galaxy's superpower.   What is it you say? Love live our glorious Union!
Eli Asher on the Phantom, 4763AC

The Korana War, also known as the Frontier Conflict, was a short-lived, though extremely deadly conflict between the Federation of Anfieden and Allied Planets - arguably the most powerful nation in the Galaxy of Astraesto, and the Korana Republic - an outlying planetary republic. Lasting nearly 2 years from 4749AC to 4751AC, the war would be fought across the planet, as well as space, by the Federation Armed Forces and the Korana Republican Militia. The Federation would organise a significant task force for the war, led by Admiral Charlie W. Wallace of the Federation Navy, consisting of two System Fleets and an Army Group, while the Republican Militia only managed a single battleship, flanked by several cruisers and destroyers.
War broke out between the two nations thanks to an attack on a Federation trading convoy heading to the Kingdom of Apreas. Carrying extreamly valuable cargo - the exact specifications of which remain a deeply held secret within the Federation, the convoy fell under attack inside Korana's controlled space area. Seeking to immediently find the attackers, the Federation Federal Government requested the small - yet effective, Korana Navy begin the hunt, in addition offering and requesting that the nearby 21st System Fleet be allowed to operate within Korana Space.   Despite fairly positive ties, and an expectation that Korana would soon diplomatically request to join the Federation as a union state, Prime Minister Emma Koleck and her government refused any support of the Federation. Koleck expressed to the Federation her willingness to help the convoy, with the only condition being that the contents of said convoy be revealed.   The near immediate rejection by Federation diplomats, and soon by President Alfred Mantle himself came as a general shock to the Korana Planetary Government. But with their only condition not met, they refused all help and military access to the Federation.

A series of conferences in the Galactic Assembly were soon held, with both the Federation and Apreas demanding Korana's assistance. Despite limited support, even from the Federation's arch rival in the 4th Imperial Republic of Jerace, Korana refused to back down. The Federation and its government, now furious with the once unconfrontational Republic, secretly ordered direct military intervention. With the Federation Interstellar Navy and Federation Federal Army massing a task force just outside of Korana's space. A final meeting between diplomats saw no more successes, even after military use was threatened, with the conclusion of the meeting seeing the diplomats officially handing over the declaration of war.   Nearly immediately, the Federation began their attack, with a short naval battle proving a complete disaster for the Korana Republic. Targeted strategic bombing would begin on the planet, laying waste to numerous military sites of the Korana Republican Militia. With many of the foremost defences of the planet disabled, full-scale landings commenced, centred around the largest cities on Korana.   It was on the ground that the viciousness of the Korana War came into play. For every metre of ground the Federation Army captured, they would take extreme casualties, at a rate higher than some of the largest battles during the 2nd Galactical War. Even as the armies of the Federation approach Korana's cities, casualties only increased, with large members of the citizenry fighting any chance of advance.

Admiral, the President requires a quick and decisive end to this conflict, we cannot have the Army struggling to gain ground against a Militia that can barely scavenge enough equipment for itself.
It's urban combat sir, we're fighting against both the Militia and the city's residents. Every building is like the strongest tanks we can muster.
You command a fleet, equipped with the most advanced weaponry in the Galaxy, destroy them.
Marcus Blair and Charlie Wallace
It was only with the support of the Federation Navy that the Army was able to advance. In a direct violation of several intergalactic treaties, the Navy opened fire on the cities of Korana. Though civilian casualties were high, the army was able to push through. With the arrival of the Federation Navy Marine Corp, the planet's defenders were unable to defend any of their cities, conceding even the capital to the Federation.   Though this opening stage of the war was rapid, conflicts between the Federation and what remained of the Koranian Republician Militia continued for nearly two years. Much of the planet would be ruined by the far, and despite Federation efforts to reconstruct most it, the populace remained directly opposed to the Federation in all its forms.

The Korana War was won, and the Navy set out to discover the attackers of their convoy. The contents of that convoy remain a debated topic even 12 years later, and as far as anyone is aware, the attackers remain unidentified and unfound. The people of Korana have never even for a moment appeared to regain any trust in the Federation, and open resistance continues.
A war between a backwater planet and a galactic superpower only ever had one real conclusion. No matter how hard they fought, however many warships they brought down, there would always be more. Korana fought an insurmountable foe, that they nevertheless set towards defeating. I will always respect them for that.
Admiral Charlie W. Wallace

A travesty of everything our grand nation supposedly stands for. More than two thousand years, the Federation of all our sectors and planets has solved our disputes via careful diplomacy and statesmanship. It is a weak leader to resort to warfare.   Did we learn nothing from the four decades of war that once engulfed the Galaxy? Or the numerous conflicts that have taken place in the Galaxy since then?   I ask the Government, and in truth, the Human species, why we continue these pointless conflicts. We approach the fifth millennium of our settlement, and in that time we have achieved so much. Yet every time we fight, we lose more than we ever gained.   Korana was not the first, nor do I fear will it be the last. I dread the coming changes to the Galaxy at large, and within our Federation.
— Senator of Gelane Natia Feres, 4750AC
