Nicaean Empire
The Nicaean Empire rules over the continent of Nicaea. It is a monarchy ruled by the Edralas family, from which the capital city, Edralas, gets its name.
Structure
The Empire is led by an Emperor or Empress, who traditionally has her Imperial Court. Positions on the court include Commander, Spymaster, Ambassador, Court Priest/Priestess, Financier, and Logistician. With the development of technology, the Logistician has taken on new responsibilities, and has also elevated a Court Alchemist to the council.
Outside of the capital, the Empire leaves regional control to their Governors, one for each of the three major kingdoms. The Governor of the East is in Zenris, in the original holdings of the Empire. The Governor in the South is in Terrahorn, the traditional capital of the Dwarven cities. The Governor of the West is in Alvanen, the traditional capital of the Elven lands.
While the Governor in the East holds a fair amount of regional power, the other two Governors aren't much more than official titles. Almost all regional power in the west still lies with the Council of Alvanen, and the Dwarven cities are still overseen by the Terrahorn Conclave.
History
The Nicaean Empire began as the conglomeration of the Human and Catfolk settlements in the Kasesh Desert. Taking up a majority of the land on the continent gave them a strong power base (though much of that land was, and still is, empty), and their power grew quickly. This was only accelerated by the rise (or appearance) of the Edralas family, which facilitated construction of the capital city. Not much is known about the events that led to their rise, leading to the local legend (particularly among Humans, Half-Elves, and Catfolk) that the family "came to the people in their moment of need".
Given the power the Empire held, it wasn't long before they moved to incorporate the Dwarven and Elven kingdoms. The Dwarves were able to be convinced that it was in their interest to join with the Empire, and a deal was struck with the Terrahorn Conclave to bring them into the fold. The Council of Alvanen, however, was not so easy to convince, and a brief war was fought between the two sides. The war mainly consisted of smaller skirmishes, with each side seeming to test the other. Depending on which Elf you ask, the story of how the war ended varies dramatically, but eventually they too gave up their independence and joined with Empire.
