Alaria's Memory

Alaria's Memory

Memorial for the Victims of the Lumber Industry

A large scale sawmill located in the Adirondack Mountains. The building was constructed in 1889. It saw much use during the first half of the 20th century. During these times there were a number of accidents caused by dryads but they never resulted in the reduction of production. Still, these accidents brought the attention of the Hunter's Guild to Tupper Lake. Alaria was killed in the violent clashes which followed. She was an important leader of the local resistance agains the logging industry.   Only with the changing of tactics to use environmental arguments and organizations were advances made. The lumber industry in the region has been reduced considerably. With this, the exploitation was both no longer possible and no longer as profitable. It was 1965 when this sawmill was closed down.

Reclamation

As the humans abandoned this building the dryads decided to turn it into a memorial monument. They purchased the land and building from the previous owner. They planted various trees and other plants on it and destroyed most of the building. Left behind are only a number of walls and one of the main sawmills protected by dryadic magic. This prevents the sawmill from being destroyed.   The local grove organizes a memorial service once a year in this place. This ritual mourns the deaths of all the dryads which have been killed by the lumber industry in the Adirondack Mountains. The ceremony honours the dryads killed by hunters in their quest to protect the forests within the mountains.

Awwww, this pulled at my heart. What a nice, sweet article. I've been enjoying your fantasy additions to our own world. As a native New Yorker, these mountains are a favorite place of mine and I like this emotional touch you've given it.

Aw, this is so sad ;_; Poor dryads. I love that they've left at least one of the sawmills standing, too.
