Knightly Letters: Ileas 17

by Alistan De la Roost

Hi Ileas,

Today we finally celebrated the new start of the village of Wolf’s Rest. The Sun was shining, the smell of freshly baked good and grilled meat and fish was reaching our keep so it wasn’t long after getting up that we headed out to see how things were going.

When we got to the Grubby Griffon we saw Gideon Mudfoot, who Luke entrusted with organizing the festival, we saw he was busy directing people putting up decorations. He immediately spoke to Luke how everything is going well, and how even some musicians and people from outside Wolf’s Rest were setting up attractions and a stage. He also asked Luke about the speech that was expected to be given by the lords and ladies, which Luke assumed would be done by me. No clue why he entrusted it to me, but I was confident that with everyone up there, and some choice words, we could announce the birth of “Wolf’s Rest” and get this festival started right. Now first thing was to see if we could use the musician’s stage, which was being set up by Mazrif, an Elf who owns a well renowned music store in Keralon. We were welcome to use the stage for a speech and he mentioned he’s organizing a music contest, bands playing music to entertain the people and compete with each other on who is the best.

This was of course the best moment to re-start the Fey-Roost Five, our old family band. Though we were down quite a few members: you are far away, our uncle is… I don’t know actually, and our brother Gideon of course is no longer with us. But Lil and I knew of two members we could add: Gael, who played the lute, and Dynia who played the flute. And while Gael was at first uninterested in a time of musical merriment for our people, Dynia managed to somehow change his mind and they both signed up. And while that puts the Fey Roost Five on four members, I think leaving that fifth spot open in honor of you and our brother works for now.

We spent the rest of the morning rehearsing with our new formed band and by noon we had to make our way to the town center, which is actually just an open spot a bit down our keep, where we were expected to give a speech. Now by the time I climbed on the stage towards Mazrif, I noticed only Lil had joined me up there and I saw the others vanish into the outer edged of the small crowd that had gathered there. And after Mazrif finished introducing us it was up to Lil and myself to speak, and I think it went well. People seemed to take the name change to Wolf’s Rest really well. And with that the festival could begin, people spread out to all the different corners of the town to taste the food and atmosphere. The afternoon was spent talking with villagers, trying to convince them bowing and other acts of reverence were unneeded.

We did get a good chance to try out the stands from the people outside Wolf’s Rest. A Firbold Cleric of Irminsul named Cleatus had brought some fallen pieces of wood of Irminsul and he explained that these are said to bind to specific souls. And for a small fee we could see if we connected to a branch and it could then be converted to a nice trinket. But sadly, besides Gael and Dadroz, no one really connected to a piece of wood, and they both walked out with a pendant and circlet of silvery wood after.

Luckily the next attraction, a make-your-own-brew stall by the Khan family, was a lot more succesful. Ended up selecting some ingredients that resulted in a brew that could increase my strength for a while. We also officially entered Mazrif’s band competition, the prize would be a hefty sum of gold and a free enchanted instrument.

Around that time Rachnar showed up with a group of bodyguards. The ambassador brought a gift, which was the custom for draconics at feasts, as was ritual combat. Now we couldn’t accept a gift or provide ritual combat but we invited him to Lil and mine’s birthday feast and I made a note to organize a good old fashioned tournament. It could be a good way to bring the people of Keralon and Velora Morenthene closer together, and it’d be a good chance to see how I measure up against other knights. Anyway, we eventually pointed Rachnar towards Hayley, who had long since vanished to try out every food stand. since the ambassador was very interested in trying out the local food.

Not long after a carriage arrived which carried not only Elsa, who was invited by Luke, but also the King. He apparently insisted on tagging along. Now the people of Wolf’s Rest at first didn’t understand, but as I made a bow and addressed him as ‘his majesty’ the gesture waved through the crowd and ended up leaving things a bit awkward, as everyone isolated themselves from the King. And I don’t think there’s any level of familiarily and alcohol that could make these people forget that reverence like they did with us.

Anyhow, after some small talk the King would head back, but not after handing us a gift: A key to the city, which despite being mostly symbolic does indeed fit on the palace gate lock. And with that he left us to continue the festival, and more specifically, to head to the stage for our musical competition.

Apparently three other bands signed up: Fiendish Grace, a band made out of three tieflings, Brass Quartet, a band consisting of four dwarves and Dead Divas, which were three very pale looking women with red eyes. And round one would be the Fey Roost Five squaring off with the Brass Quartet.
