Hello Ileas,
It's been a few days so time for an update: we had our first meeting with Quinn, the so-styled Fey Lord of the land, that held his court every full moon in the abandoned church near Wolf’s Rest. So in the full red glow of the moon Ava we went there, passed some tests where I got to throw a rock at Gael (that was a dagger in disguise) and Luke demonstrated his wits in a riddle. But meeting Quinn went smoother than expected and we ended up having a good time at his feast. So for the time we have no need to worry about Quinn.
But this was all a preamble for the day after, where we would set out to Latebra Velora. Despite the reasons we are going there: the lance and a chance at confronting the Black Knight, I couldn’t help but be a bit giddy at visiting the great capital of the draconics. Perhaps I’d even get a view at a real dragon. Yet we still had to prepare for the 10 day trip by getting some rations and informing everyone that we were gone. And informing her we were leaving was as good an excuse as any to visit Galiene in the cathedral again to check up on the situation there, and when we told her we were heading up north and had some reason to think the lance might be there she stuffed a sending stone in my hand, saying that if anything comes up with the lance we should contact her, since she has ways to get to Latebra Velora on short notice. And when I mentioned we were going after the Black Knight she added that I can use it if we get in trouble too, noting that we’ve been getting involved in more and more dangerous tasks.
So with sending stones tucked away and our horses mounted we set out, first stop is Ravensfield, or whatever became of it when we left behind an army in the embers of our battle with Rayl, hard to believe this was scarcely a month and a half ago. And speaking of things that happened then: our first day of travel ended at the site of where we left the crashed heap of the dragon construct we defeated, seems that multiple wizards and workers set up around them to disable the magic of the remains and strip it. We also heard rumors of a few villagers a day out of the way for us that are struggling with a strange disease that is ravaging their livestock: cattle getting strange spots and then they grow weak and die. We weren’t in a big rush so why not help these people out, we thought.
So the next day we deviated off our path and eventually ended up on some fields with livestock that indeed looked sickly and had spots. I decided to stay behind with our horses while the others went into the fields to have a closer look. I must have been lost in thought as a local boy, Kal, and his dog Zara suddently appeared in front of me and asked what we were doing here. After explaining we were knights and heard about the troubles here I noticed he had a strange bite wound on his hand, with a coloring like the once on the fur of the infected cattle.
So when everyone got back I showed Kal’s hand to Lil and Hayley. So while they were investigating and healing I heard what they found: that a bunch of cows died in the field and blood soaked into the ground, that eating the grass from this spot might be making them sick which leads to malnutrition. But Gael was relating this conversation with a cow, and how some flying predators with claws and teeth ate a bunch of cows when he was interrupted by Kal screaming. Liliana had healed his hand with her divine magic but this caused a worm to eventually burst its way out of the healed skin only to fall to the ground, dead. Luke recognized it as a Kyuss worm, a type of parasite that makes its way to the brain to create a sort of zombie. Asking Kal where this came from he explained he felt a stab in his hand when he was feeding the cows. Seeing as we could be having a zombie pandemic on our hand we asked the lad to guide us to his home to see if we can prevent further damage.
Now, when reached his family’s farm we were greeted by Kalindra, Kal’s mother, who invited us in and offered us thanks for curing Kal with tea, pastries and providing a place to sleep for the night. She mentioned that there are wyvern attacks from the east from time to time, but that recently they became more irrational, that instead of hunting for food it’s more rabid attacking of large herds that they’ve now split up between ill and healthy. We would go and check these wyverns, but the day was already nearing the end and it might be best to wait for the farmers to get back from the fields and we could set up a trap instead with a large herd of cows.
So we ended up going around a bit to see if we find others that were bitten, Kalindra gave us a first place to look when she remembered a stable boy from the farm over having a bite wound in their leg. When we went over we heard moaning from inside one of the buildings and when asking a nearby villager if we can go in the door opened to a Zombie immediately moving past the villager to attack us. And even as a second zombie came form a side room it ignored the villager to attack my sister and me, almost infecting Lil with a worm that Hayley ended up swatting off her. In the end they were defeated quite fast and what was left of the stable boys collapsed in a heap of immovable worms.
We found out rather quick why the villager was ignored, when Lil used her healing touch on him he also grabbed a bite wound, this one was on the shoulder, and a worm fell out. So it seems they were out to spread the infection to us. We immediately asked everyone at the farm the gather around and tell us if they have similar bite wounds, and four of them did. So while Liliana and Hayley started operating to remove the worms, Lil was running low on her healing, Luke and I decided to investigate the stable we fought the zombies in, curious where the bite wounds came from. Which led us to a loose flooring where a tunnel was dug out where something could have crawled around in to infect others with worms.
So when our sisters were done operating, we all gathered up to follow the tracks of the tunnel to a small temple at the other side of this hamlet.
