Knightly Letter: Ileas 19 pt2

by Alistan De la Roost

The temple proved to be quite a battleground, as inside an elf who worshipped ‘The Old Mother’ was experimenting to create these worms. And he had a legion of undead with which to ambush us, regardless of our initial good intentions. I got shot down by the Elf’s magic but the others did manage to finish him off.

Looking around we found some treasure but also a statue of a demonic looking woman which we take to be the Old Mother, it resembles idols that are being sold even in Keralon. Gael also deduced from the Elf’s notes where the rabid wyverns’ nest might be. With the end of the day being close we headed back to get some sleep and look at the returning villagers. Now, the battle left me quite fatigued so I don’t remember everything, but I do remember us buying off some sick cows as compensation for these villagers’ suffering. Think we had no actual intention to take them along, especially when the next morning came and we headed off to hunt some wyverns.

The nest was to the West of the hamlet we were staying at in a small and clear forest, at least small compared to the sprawling, dense Lorewood. But there were other dangers in this forest, because we encountered petrified villagers: woodcutters, guardsmen and the like. Not unlike Onvyr all those years ago. Luke thought this could be the work of Basilisks and Gael found tracks of about two. Making note that we should handle this threat and send work back to Keralon about the petrified victims we made camp for the day, as the nest was still far off and night was approaching. We stayed in the ruins of what probably was a draconic settlement from before Irminsul was born, a time of Old Gods and powerful heroes.

The next day led us to what we thought was the Wyvern’s nest, which was at the top of a hill that served as the keep for the ruined settlement we found ourselves in. Meaning it was quite hard to just climb the steep walls and we had to find a better route in, Hayley even transforming into a giant spider to better climb the walls. While climbing Fiachna came back with a scout: the creatures up there weren’t wyverns but resembled more the small dragon creatures we fought in Ravensfield, ridden by adherents of the cult we were fighting then. Remembering they had some intelligence we approached them to ask about the infection, but before we got anywhere a loud screech announced wyverns descending upon the smaller dragons. By the time we got to where the wyverns landed, they had already slain one of the creatures and were ravaging the remains.

Sadly the wyverns were beyond saving and we had to put them down and burn the remains, together with anything they killed there. After taking a breather we noticed these ruins still had a pristine copper door with a dragon on it, some magic and nonmagic locks keeping it closed, both of which fell easily after Luke and Dadroz had their way with it, opening a stairway down into the ground.

Downstairs we found quite a strange dragon’s lair, strange because it barely looks like it’s made for a dragon, plenty of imagery of an elf or human warrior also decorated the doors. It also looked barely visited, besides a pristine vault door the other hallway was partially collapsed and now inhabited by a strange elemental called a Galeb Duhr. But leaving it alone, we also found that the statue of a copper dragon in the hall we entered definitely obscured a hidden passage and that the statue was also a defensive measure against those opening the vault door, as scorch marks littered the floor.

But luckily, Dadroz chose to use this prodigious skills in lockpicking for adventure rather than petty crime and managed to unlock the vault door for us. Behind which laid a dragon’s hoard, an almost uncountable amount of gold, flanked by acidic pools and a statue of a knight, though withered by time. My sister and I were entranced by the majesty of the statue, wondering what great figure would be honored like this in a dragon’s lair when Luke pointed out of crystal on the statue that could be used to open the hidden passage. But we were all surprised when Hayley, caught by a sudden bout of dragon-sickness, had made her way to the hoard and was attacked by the hoard itself! Some gold coins were actually scarabs, you see, and from the acidic pools came blobs that engaged us in combat.

The fight was tough, as the enemies made it hard for me and Lil to link up and hold up a majority of the forces. I was admittedly also unconscious for a lot of it, courtesy one of the blobs getting a nasty hit in on my head as I made my way to Hayley.

Regardless of that, we did manage to triumph, and were left with a massive hoard, the scarabs had released a dust that should have alerted any dragon that their hoard was being taken, but nothing came. So we dug through the hoard and collected gold that we could use for the people of Wolf’s Rest, and even a magic shield for Liliana and some nice gloves for Dadroz.

After resting up we then made our way to the statue to enter the passage behind it. Luke slotted the crystal and it revealed a massive pool of acid with a staircase down. I barely had time to contemplate how this did not look like a place a dragon would live in when a blast of acid came over me, as the largest blob of acid I’ve ever seen (and hopefully will see) arose from the large pool. Barely leaving any time to think we darted forward and jumped down the stairs. By the time everyone else made it down, it dawned on me the acid had burned parts of my brother’s armor, but I had no time to repair it and we went the only way we could: down.

Down we found even more acid, but it were pools in a giant cave system not unlike the one we found under Caern Fussil, we were greeted by a Xorn, a sort of earth elemental who was eating through stone and collecting gems. Sadly enough none of us could speak his language and my attempts at telling him we’re not enemies did not seem to convince him, though he did at least leave us alone to explore the caves.

We did not have to go long before Gael pointed out there were many tracks of rust monsters, and not envying more of my brother’s plate getting destroyed we took another path, which did lead us to a small room with an acid pool but also a dwarven statue with arms stretched out as if to receive something and the inscription: “A glimmering frost from depths untold. A timeless spark that can’t be controlled. Reflecting light with every glance. This gem’s allure, a mesmerizing dance.”

Though we had little time to digest this riddle as Luke’s magical senses alerted him to acidic apparitions being summoned from below the pool of acid and were now upon us, though as suddenly as they appeared they were dispelled and beaten leaving us instead to ponder what magic here was summoning acid creatures.
