Ileas,
Good news, as you can guess from receiving this letter I did not turn into a fish though things got quite difficult. As you know we were about to go into the water, but first we retrieved the silver box under the body of the giant alligator. It contained some diary pages of an ancestor of Meredith and his possessed daughter that sang and came to this lake. Not unlike what we just experienced. It also talked about using a power, likely the ring, to lock her up in the lake.
This hardly changed what we were going to do, which is go into the lake. And as we approached a glowing spot at the center of the lake we were attacked by a snake-like creature made completely out of bones and two fish-like monsters. Fighting underwater is a strange experience, your sword has to cut through bulks of water before it can cut your enemy, making large swinging attacks less than desirable. But luckily swords are versatile and come in all shapes and sizes so I hoped a dagger, more suited for short thrusting jabs, would serve me well here. But they were immune to common steel and had to resort to my enchanted sword. As I knocked one of the fish monsters out it transformed back into a person, confirming that these are advanced versions of the cursed villagers.
In the end a lightning bolt from the bone snake killed the other fish monster and knocked me out and since we wanted to interrogate the knocked out person we retreated back to the surface. We learned from the man that he the last he remembered he was lured into the lake after waking up with immense thirst. Since we could learn very little else we decided to at least escort him back to Marsh's Fury for his own safety.
But as we arrived back, the village was under attack. Although the villagers themselves were safe in the forest the village was overrun with swarms of frogs, fish monsters, ghostly shades and giant alligators. We managed to survive though the worst of it was Gael being impacted by the shade, looking a shade less healthy as a result. But there was little time to ponder on this since we rushed to Meredith's house, to find that she had been dragged away to the same accursed lake we just came from and we had to go swimming again.
A benefit of keeping your plate armor on though, is that getting to the bottom would be very easy. And luckily for those without (temporary) gills the orb of blue light gave in to a dry cave where we came upon a strange scene. A strange troll like monster was performing a ritual with Meredith as one of the fish monters and an undead coatl were standing guard. Gael managed to teleport himself into the ritual and drag Meredith out as Liliana and I covered his retreat. But as the troll raised a wall of water and I was holding back the coatl the battle was split up between those outside and inside the wall.
In the end we killed everyone except Meredith, since we had to revert the curse. Liliana was trying her best to save the girl that was turned into the troll but it sadly was not to be. And the body of the girl would be a reminder of our failure to save her in exchange to ensure that the entire village was saved. But lamentations would have to wait as the barrier sealing the monster came down and water gushed in. In the end Gael, being an accomplished swimmer was the only one not struggling. I was held back by my armor so resorted to helping out those struggling with air as I still had quite some air left. In the end Hayley's magic got me and others to the surface and we made our way back to Marsh's Fury.
The villagers were safe, the fish monsters were transformed back and Meredith was safe and healthy. She even gave us a sizable reward of four hundred platinum. We took the rest of the day to help the village and Meredith with rebuilding some of the damage caused before going back home the day after.
So we reached our goal of earning some extra cash to organize a festival in Wolf's Rest, and have some extra savings to boot.
Will write again soon,
Ali
