The first round was quite in our favor. We played “Take me down to Keralon City” and With Gael laying down the rhythm it was easy to get our best performance out with Dynia laying down the final note on her flute that got the audience cheering for us. The Brass Quartet tried their best, but mostly focused on trying to break our rhythm which was, like I said, guarded by Gael’s back up lute playing. After a gracious send off by Mazrif it was the turn for the second contest: The Dead Divas vs the Fiendish Grace, a battle between melanchony and cheery tunes. But what kept us busy was the sudden appearance of a bunch of rough looking men, seemingly mercs that just arrived. But approaching them got us nowhere as they were anything but friendly and responsive. At the time I put it down as just being tired from traveling. But there was little time to think about it as we had to get ready for round two, as the Dead Divas were victorious over the Fiendish Grace.
The second round was quite a bit more challenging than the first, the Divas managed to stun a few of us into inaction with their melanchony. But Gael’s ability to keep everyone synced and Liliana’s mastery of the violin pulled through in the end. And while we were now in the finals, only to face off with Mazrif himself, the more notable thing that was happening was the mercenaries walking off, and luckily Dadroz was shadowing them for they walked up to our keep and attacked the guards stationed there, some retreated into the keep to barricade the keep against the mercs. Our immediate reflex was to all go there and beat the crap out of the assailants but Hayley pointed out our absence could cause some unrest, so in the end Hayley and myself stayed behind as the others went off. Least I could do is inform Mazrif that we should move the time up a bit in case.
Now when they all came back almost an hour later I learned what happened: they engaged the mercenaries, who had killed two of our guards, among which young Searc, who had only joined the guard last week. But right as the battle got going a powerful Elf priest and a hooded assassin revealed themselves, with an arrow from the assassin almost killing my sister outright. They also had two giant spiders with them which almost overwhelmed them but in the end, they managed to kill everyone except the assassin who hid and ran off. But some magic from Luke helped them track the assassin until a summoned Fire Elemental forced them to break off the chase. In the end the assassins escaped and some mercs managed to run away, but Hayley’s raven Fiachna was tailing them. So we can only wait for the raven to come back with more info as we prepared for the last round of the battle of the bards. For which even Vivienne showed up, sitting on an ice-y throne, watching.
I was curious how Mazrif, being alone, was hoping to create symphonies similar to a band. But first we had to face an audience who was expecting the best of the best for music, even a master of the lute like Mazrif could barely get a dent in the audience’s expectation but slowly the Fey Roost Five could. In the end, even Mazrif’s extra set of arms wielding extra instruments could not withstand the climactic solo Lil performed with the instrument that got the crowd roaring. It meant we were the champions of this battle and so we had earned our prize, with a hefty sum of gold (that we shared with Dynia and the rest went to the treasury) and one of our instruments to be enchanted by Mazrif. The instinct was to have the winning instrument, Liliana’s, enchanted. But as she isn’t a knight she can’t just run around with a magic instrument. But it was hard to deny my sister her deserved reward so we handed her violin over.
The festival went on of course, but we mostly prepared for an early morning where after Fiachna came back with intel we could jump on a horse and chase down those mercs and hopefully get a clue on who hired them.
I’ll hopefully get that info to you in a next letter.
