Dated 9th of Brigan, evening
Dear Sers and Dames,
I hope this report finds you all in good health. If all goes well you should be the group of knights who set out from Keralon after a messenger from this ranch reported the strange happenings here, and now this letter was handed to you by one of the warm inhabitants of Epona Ranch. Well, our group was traveling North and along the path heard of the rumors about the illness and came here with haste, as it was only a small diversion from our path and illnesses can get out of hand if not treated in time.
To the best that we can gather, what happened before we arrived is this:
A cultist, specifically an adherrent to something called “The Old Mother”, had made a base in a temple a bit away from this ranch. He was using what we divined are Kyuss worms to infect the local population. These are worms that, once infecting their host, would make their way to the brain and turn them into a sort of zombie. The cultist spread these by crawling under the barns of the ranch and infecting farmhands and possibly cows, but also some wyverns who had their nest a day's travel by horse. These wyverns, who usually preyed on the cattle in this area, then started brutally attacking the cattle instead, spreading the illness.
And what happened over the few days we were here (6th of Brigan til 9th of Brigan):
We investigated the infected cows and villagers, finding numerous infected among them, about 7 people were infected and a dozen-and-four cows. We saved five people, sadly two farmhands already succumbed to the Kyuss worms, and two cows and compensated the villagers for the cows lost. From here we found tracks to the temple where the cultist had their hideout:
We killed the cultist his swarm of undead in the temple (we took the treasure and part of it compensated the villagers for the cows they lost), he had notes on the worms and directions on a wyvern nest he infected, there's also a statue there of the Old Mother, who resembles idols sold in Keralon, the notes also had a song:
"Deep in the Lorewood, where shadows creep,
The Old Mother has finally stirred from sleep,
With bony hands and maw so wide,
She'll come for you, don't try to hide.
Through twisted trees, her steps do fall,
her voice a distant, eerie call.
She seeks the lost, the wandering soul,
To snap their necks and eat them whole.
Beware when evening's chill winds blow,
For she is out there, and you should know,
If you hear the voice, don't turn around
Or in the woods, your bones'll be found"
Some of us remember hearing this song, sung mostly by Keralon's children while playing. From there we culled the Wyvern's nest in the woods West of here. So in all estimation the infection is contained.
If you care for our recommendation it would be this: if all is well at the ranch, have a look at the temple and make note of the statue (break it if you will) and make this report to Keralon’s circles and palace guards. Our advice would be to look into the origin of similar idols that are sold in Keralon and any serious believers. Just in case this is part of a bigger thing.
