Ileas,
I was waiting to write again until after we faced the Black Knight but something remarkable happened and I want to write it down while the memory is fresh.
We set out from Latebra Velora to head to the Black Knight´s camp as Gael, who was talking to some birds, told us the copper dragon that was around had slept nearby.
Now we didn't find any trace of her but the detour did mean we had to set up camp at the tent of the retainer I duelled a few days before, and right as we were heading to bed a giant stag fell from the sky, followed by the copper dragon we were looking for. She landed before us and started eating the stag, waiting for us to exit Luke's protective barrier. We waited for her to finish her meal and bury the remains before introducing ourselves, she introduced herself as Cypria and wanted to thank us for dealing with the infected wyverns and leaving the basilisks, and even though some things were missing from her hoard she considered it payment for what we did. She was following us for a while, and was the owl we saw at the undead camp. From there she conversed with Gael about why we were here and took heed of our warning about Velora and that she knows the Greatwyrm is not one whose territory you intrude on for too long. But as the conversation looked to die out and we'd return to our beds she beckoned to me, she wanted to talk to me and in private for that matter. She lowered her wing to invite me for a flight, and intrigued by what in the world and planes beyond she would want to talk to me for, I hopped on.
What followed was an experience unlike any other, Cypria took off at breakneck speed as I held on for dear life, the moons' light barely pierced through the clouds so after the light our camp faded I was stuck in darkness, but it lasted for only a second as we pierced the clouds and the moonlight poured over us. I can try to put it into words but I fear they'll be a disservice: Meari, the Herald, was in full and the blue light washing over the clouds, making it look like the summer sky was beneath us, with the holes in the clouds forming floating islands of swamps and forest. But the true wonder was Cypria herself, her scales reflecting the light of not just the Blue Moon, but the stars as well. The world felt both small and grand from up there, but above all else it felt wonderful and beautiful. And for a moment, all worries slipped from me.
Strangely, it immediately reminded me of an evening I spent with Galiene on the roof of our town house in Keralon, perhaps it was because of the Blue Moon that washed over us that night as well. But I had to push those feelings down for the moment, they were for a man who did not fail her when they took the lance. For a man who could give her a life not shackled by an Archfey demanding her second child. For a man who is not about to face the Black Knight and his curse for vengeance. But above all else, it was good to push them down as Cypria started to speak, and that deserved attention.
Though I was surprised at how close the topic was to the repressed thoughts: she spoke about her lair and the images of a knight, and how the rubble we encountered hid a tomb to her former companion who passed a few centuries ago. But more, the lance in the Cathedral of Keralon belonged to him. She gifted it to Keralon in the hope some other knight could use it but now that it's stolen she requested that we look for it. In return we could enter her companion's tomb and take some of the equipment he had as it would be useful to us. But what's more, there was a magical saddle there that'd fit her, and she would consider bonding to me through it.
There were many things to say to that, such as why did she think a knight that walked carelessly into her lair and almost stole her hoard and definitely ransacked part of the place with his friends was a good choice to bond to. But I was overcome with the sincerity of her offer, I could only say I was truly honoured and swore to retrieve that lance. Though I had to admit I had no idea where to find it, and will have to rely on my friends to find it for us. She chuckled, saying it's not bad to rely on others, that if I walked in alone in the cathedral that day I would have died, and so would Galiene. Not wanting to think about that I changed the topic, thanking her for the beautiful view, saying I´d cherish it for the rest of my life. And that's when she surprised me for what had to be the third time (fourth if you count the stag falling from the sky): she offered to fly me around for a few hours if I so wished. Not letting such a chance slip by I grabbed my tarnstone, told Lil I'd be gone for a few extra hours and buckled in for the flight of a lifetime. If just for a short while, I could lay aside my worries and bask in the beauty of a summer night's flight with Cypria.
When she dropped me off a few hours later I almost worried I couldn't stop smiling as I told everyone what happened up there. I was about to take up my watch as the reality of the world dropped on me again, my smile fading, the Black Knight waited and I should be well rested for it. So I asked Dadroz to take over my watch as I settled into my bag.
But I had to write this before I settle into what are sure to be dreams of starlit scales and moonlit flights.
