Bosun Lamotte
Bosun Lamotte is a strange figure of a man: aged, in the outdated livery of a Unitas ship captain. Lamotte is known to appear here and there, invariably at drinking establishments, and pays his tab with small ingots of gold-doped zirconium oxide. He claims to be the last surviving crewmember of the Unwelcome Caller, a pirate vessel of some 50 souls that vanished somewhere in the Lister Radiation Belt shortly after making off with an emperor’s fortune from a Unitas treasury vessel.
A treasury vessel that carried, along with a system’s worth of taxes, a load of gold-doped zirconium oxide bound for the aeronautics factories of Ulas V.
Invariably, when he appears, he catches the eye of a rogue or two thinking him an easy mark. Invariably, they follow him from the drinking establishment—and, invariably, they are never seen again.
Accounts from those who claim to have shared a table with the man say the Unwelcome Caller rests, shattered, on some far-flung moon, where the airless terrain is scattered with gold from its burst hold. Others say the man is a specter, seeking the souls of those as avaricious as he was in life and claiming them for his own. Still others say Lamotte led a failed mutiny which cost the lives of each and every crewmate aboard save himself, to his design, and he now lives a kingly life on some paradisical world, venturing only to the gutters when the fancy takes him, to flaunt his ill-gotten wealth and escape yet again.
