Malachor Wolfsbane

Malachor Wolfsbane

Malachor Wolfsbane is a half-orc paladin, the current head of the Waterdeep City Guard as the Warden of Waterdeep, and a hero of the Great Dragon War, where he fought as a member of the Breadwinners.

History

Early Life

Malachor was born in 1469 to Tanya, a human woman who had Malachor after a one-time fling. Malachor's early life was spent in relative poverty. Tanya worked as a maid in noble manors to feed her son and disciplined her harshly.   Malachor saw the City Guard as an escape from poverty and as a chance to do something great. After intense personal training, Malachor was accepted into their ranks in 1488. A year later, Malachor was dispatched with a team of fellow guardsmen to a supposed werewolf den beyond the walls of Waterdeep. While there, Malachor panicked and fled, believing he had consigned his friends and fellow guardsmen to their deaths. Unable to cope with the guilt, Malachor quite the Guard and devoted himself to Torm, resolving never to abandon his allies again.

Early Adventures

In 1490, Malachor enrolled in Gregory Tumbleton University to obtain a finer grasp on both religion and military strategy. During his first year, he met fellow classmates Mariana Goldfinch, Legolass, and Amber when the four of them saved Eyleth Veral from the Cult of the Dragon. After a year of study abroad, Malachor returned to Tumbleton in 1491 with his companions to find the small town under attack by the Cult of the Dragon. He helped fight back against the cult and then followed the cult to their nearby hideout. Malachor assisted in rescuing Ser Vich from his restraints. He was then recruited, alongside his three classmates, into assisting Ser Vich rally the forces of the Sword Coast.   While taking a stop in Elturel to meet with Onthar Frume, Malachor participated in the Elturel City Fair and met Jessabelle Leonin. He assisted Leonin in getting Baldur's Gate to join the burgeoning anti-Dragon Cult Alliance. During his time in Baldur's Gate, Amber tragically died while the group attempted to infiltrate Lysara the Grin's gang. Malachor later assisted Order of the Gauntlet member Eilidh in stopping Lysara, leading to the former's recruitment. During the Baldur's Gate Uprising, Malachor joined his friends in stopping Alexander Rake. It was during this uprising that Legolass's sword, Bastion, regained sentience.   During a break on Stormbreak Island, Malchor met Akhros and Ava, during a mission to stop a Cult of the Dragon plot to kidnap alchemists to craft gold for Tiamat's hoard. Akhros and Ava would then join Malachor and his companions.   In 1492, Malachor and his companions traveled to Salt Lake, where they ended the Siege of Salt Lake by forcing the abdication of Mariana's father. The Siege of Salt Lake also served as the official formation of the group, The Breadwinners.

The Breadwinners

Shortly after leaving Salt Lake, Malachor was confronted by Alek, a fellow guardsman he had presume dead but had, in fact, been transformed into a werewolf. Alek explained that not all of the guardsmen he had abandoned were killed. Those that survived were now werewolves and blamed Malachor for their condition. His humanity briefly returned, Alek asked Malachor to kill him, which he did.   Malachor joined the rest of the Breadwinners, alongside Agent Viné Seraph of Force Grey, in infiltrating the Cult of the Dragon's base within the Mere of Dead Men. Malachor then remained behind with the Scaly Death Tribe while his companions explored Yssondreneth's Tomb and recovered the Gauntlet of the Black Dragon.
The Breadwinners had a run in with the Reverse Funnel System adventuring group in Silverymoon during their mission to steal the Book of Draconic Rituals.   After this last mission, Malachor and the Breadwinners were given full authority to act on behalf of the newly formed Council of Waterdeep. At their direction, the group engaged in many missions. In addition, the The Breadwinners were joined by the bard Esme, whom the party met as Mariana's one-time lover.

An Agent of the Council

Malachor and the Breadwinners fought and slayed the white dragon Arauthator in his lair on Oyaviggaton. They captured Varram the Blue, one of the Cult of the Dragon's Wyrmspeakers and slayed the Green Wyrmspeaker Neronvain and his dragon Chuth in the Misty Forest. Malachor harvested the scales of the green dragon and used them to forge himself armor.

In late 1492, Malachor assisted the Breadwinners in negotiating with the Metallic Dragon Council. To secure their alliance, the Breadwinners recovered the Staff of Shadowfell Sundering, which had been stolen from the copper dragon Tazmikella, from the ruins of Ken Asari.   Malachor stayed behind in Waterdeep to aid the Council of Waterdeep in developing battle strategies during his companions' missions to Xonthal's Tower and Thay. Malachor rejoined with the Breadwinners during the Battle of Hardbuckler in the failed attempt to neutralize High Marshal Amara.   During the Battle at the Well of Dragons, Malachor and the Breadwinners spearheaded the infiltration of the Well itself, slaying Don Rel and subsequently Bastion, who had been accumulating power during the war and absorbed all the souls at the Well of Dragons.

Life After the War

Following the Great Dragon War, Malachor became a well-known figure as a former Breadwinner. Before settling down, Malachor left on his own to bring peace to his former friends and guardsmen, who he knew were out in the world suffering due to their lycanthropy. Malachor attempted to heal those that could be reasoned with, but was forced to kill many who's bestial nature and rage had driven them mad over the years.   In 1494, Malachor was welcomed back into the Waterdeep City Guard, his previous resignation rescinded. His knowledge of military strategy and prowess in battle allowed him to move swiftly up the ranks, eventually becoming the head of the City Guard, one of the youngest ever.

Social

Contacts & Relations

Malachor remains on relatively good terms with the former Breadwinners, though not as close as others. However, he has a special rivalry with Mariana Goldfinch, dating back to their sparring in the Elturel City Fair. The two of them famously butt heads and challenge each other every moment they get. Since 1492, the tournament in every Midsummer Fair is capstoned by the two former companions fighting each other as viciously as possible.
